Irish in Washington state

Monday, March 17, 2025

For St. Patrick's Day, the census bureau released maps showing the percentage of residents with Irish ancestry in the U.S. and in each state.

Washington state has what seems like a low percentage - 9.8%.

However, I had my DNA analyzed by Ancestry years ago - multiple nationalities but it wasn't until their latest revision this year that they show me with Irish ancestry. I'm still trying to figure out where that snuck into my family tree!

As a high end amateur genealogist, Ancestry DNA has issues. They tend to the British Empire, so it is interesting that initially you had no Irish ancestry. Ancestry had me as Irish, and there is no Irish blood in me. I celebrate at an Irish pub in Madison Park, with a "Kiss Me I am Irish" and no one kissed me, not even my Irish wife. Heritage DNA was dead on, Bulkan, Slovak, Austro-Hungarian, German and French-Canadian-Ojibway. In Nov., we spent a month in Hungary, Slovakia with cousins and Vienna and it was most awesome, felt at home!
