Roundabouts are coming to the 145th Corridor!
Learn more about the project and how to navigate roundabouts by vehicle, bicycle, or on foot. CityLearn is a monthly opportunity to learn about timely topics in Shoreline. Hybrid meetings are open to everyone. Participants connect directly with City Councilmembers and staff from different departments.
They must have some info that says these roundabouts speed up traffic but it doesn't seem so to me. They are more annoying than anything especially when they make them a few blks away from each other. In one sense Shoreline tells us their aim is to speed up the flow of traffic and then they take out lanes. Seems more than a little skitzy.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous @ 8:46 AM: Your intuition is wrong on both counts.
ReplyDeleteRoundabouts increase both the maximum throughput and average speed of car traffic along a corridor by reducing the amount of time spent stationary at traffic lights. More importantly, they greatly reduce the number of collisions resulting in injury or death. Shoreline, Seattle, WSDOT, and Sound Transit all worked together on the I-5/145th interchange project to ensure it would allow for reliable public transit and meet both current and future demand for personal vehicle and freight traffic.
Regarding your comment about removing lanes (which isn't happening on 145th), reducing the number of lanes does not necessarily increase travel time. Shoreline does a traffic study prior to any changes to the roadway configuration to confirm that lane reductions will not adversely affect travel time. I recommend reading the document "Road Diet Myth Busters" from the Federal Highway Administration: https://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/road_diets/resources/fhwasa16074/
I understand that change can be scary, but these changes have been carefully considered. I encourage you to attend the CityLearn event if you would like to learn more about the project. I have attended them in the past and found them interesting.
Ok this sounds great for the 50k plus idiots who don't know how to even merge onto the last metered on ramp in north Seattle?? I want to quit my job and join the state patrol and just pull over idiots for invasive and reckless driving!! All of this is so ridiculous if people could just learn to merge we wouldn't have this problem!!!
ReplyDeleteWhile they might not be reducing lanes on 145th the clearly are all over Shoreline. Last week they took out the turn lane on 200th and Meridian. They are making bike lanes and apparently roadside parking areas.
