Love that this events are happening, sad that there aren't sidewalks to safely get from 15th down 185th, or along either side of 10th Ave between 175th and 185th. It's like all the residents of North City within walking distance are supposed to just dodge (increasing) traffic to take advantage of the new station. Not to mention all the kids along this stretch of 10th that catch school busses. Making these areas safe for pedestrians has come up on this site before, but it's just hitting home for me more now that the station is opening and I'm thinking about my younger ones walking down these busy roads on rainy days.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous is entirely correct, but whenever you put a rail station next to a highway, you've already ensured that it can't really be walkable, nor can crucial transit-oriented development (TOD) occur so people can live realistically without cars. That's exactly why the entire ST3 package makes just a 1% dent in greenhouse emissions, and why Sound Transit is covering lower and lower shares of its expenses from fares, which slows system expansion and reduces service. Since 1986, Vancouver, BC has operated a rail network that turns a profit while running every 3 minutes. A big part of that is keeping their stations away from highways that are major barriers to walking.
