The fire was thought to have been started by an illegal campfire.
The island has been closed to the public since an illegal barbecue sparked a peat bog fire on the island in July 2009, that lasted for months and filled the skies with smoke.
Another case of ‘this-is-why-we-can’t-have-nice-things’. If we actually punished people who wreck public property, we might discourage others from considering it, and then all of us might be able to enjoy places like Edmount Island.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, too many of us feel that holding people accountable isn’t ‘woke’, so anything goes.
I find it ironic to see signs like this. One of my favorite signs reads "County property, no tresspassing". Or in other words... land owned by the general public, keep out
ReplyDeleteNot just anyone can get to an island in the middle of a lake under their own power.
