Lynnwood Link stations opened on Friday

By Diane Hettrick

The Shoreline South / 148th station had Welcome to Shoreline painted on the pavement. Children were provided with chalk and invited to add color.

All four of the Lynnwood Link stations opened on Friday, August 30, 2024. It was a hot, sunny day, and the stations were full of people.

I'm not sure how many of them walked to the stations - I suspect a lot did. When I drove by the Lynnwood station at 5:30pm there were pedestrians all along 44th. A group of about 20 were waiting for the walk light to go into the grounds where booths were already crowded.

Mountlake Terrace also had a huge number of booths, filling the large parking lot adjacent to the station and its garage.

All four Lynnwood Link transit stations open on Friday, August 30, 2024

SEATTLE (Aug. 29, 2024) – HNTB, a leading infrastructure solutions firm, celebrates a significant milestone in Seattle’s regional transit development with the completion of the Lynnwood Link Extension.

Now called the “1 Line to Lynnwood”, the line connects Northgate Station to Lynnwood Transit Center and marks the first light rail extension to Snohomish County, Washington. The extensive, multi-year project, incorporating four new light rail stations, three parking garages, and 8.5 miles of track, is the culmination of innovative design and a collaborative partnership.

The grand opening ceremonies kick off on Aug. 30, 2024, at 11am with a ribbon cutting at the Lynnwood City Center Station, leading to the inaugural service to and from Lynnwood. At 4pm, members of the public are invited to join the celebration, including activities and entertainment at each of the four new stations, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Shoreline North (at 185th), and Shoreline South (at 148th).

HNTB served as project manager on all engineering and architectural aspects of the project design and construction support. HNTB’s innovative approach, including the use of cutting-edge 3-D modeling and delivering design packages early, allowed construction to begin prior to completion of the entire design, enhanced the team collaboration and significantly accelerated the construction timeline.

“This new service marks the first time Sound Transit’s Link Light Rail System has extended into Snohomish County, broadening the range of the entire line and connecting communities across the region,” said Snohomish County Executive and Sound Transit vice chair Dave Somers.

Finishing touches to the Shoreline Station

Four passenger stations have been constructed, two in the City of Shoreline, one in Mountlake Terrace and one in Lynnwood, each designed to accommodate high volumes of daily commuters. HNTB is also managing the design of an additional fifth station at 130th Street in Seattle, reflecting its ongoing involvement and adaptability in accommodating changes and expansions to the project scope.

Moein El-Aarag, project manager and group director with HNTB, said “We successfully navigated and fostered partnerships across multiple agencies, including Washington State Department of Transportation and the Cities of Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Shoreline and Seattle. Together, we have achieved a significant milestone in enhancing our region’s transit infrastructure.”

Toxic algae - Echo Lake and possibly Lake Ballinger

Echo Lake
and the swimming beach remain CLOSED due to toxic algae and fecal bacteria.

The water is unsafe -- do not swim, fish, wade, or enter it. Do not let dogs enter or drink the water.

Toxic algae can cause severe illness or death in humans and animals.

Shoreline City staff will continue testing the water and will reopen the lake only when King County Public Health determines it is safe to do so.

Ballinger Lake - the City of Edmonds is warning about an algal bloom in Ballinger Lake. They sent a drone around the perimeter of the lake and determined that the algae was all around the edges. They have not tested it yet but warn people to be cautious and stay out of the water for now.

An advance look at the Lynnwood Link

Train in the station

Pat Deagen and Claudia Meadows rode the rails on Wednesday in a media advance tour of the new Lynnwood Link stations.

The entire line is called the 1 Line now that the four Lynnwood stations are opening today.

King County Executive Dow Constantine and
Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers.

Dow Constantine - King County Executive emphasized the Link connection to job centers and regional stadiums. He commented that the Link will improve livability, and help us meet future growth challenges.

Already, thousands of new housing units have been built near light rail. It will catalyze development and help reduce ambient air pollution.

Dave Somers - Snohomish County Executive recalled 31 years ago was the birth of the organization which grew into Sound Transit and now the Link Extension will open within 48 hours.

Attendees expressed a lot of enthusiasm about being able to ride to a ball game or the Seattle Art Museum or the Symphony and all the city has to offer.

Each station has original artwork, themed and created by known artists.

Pat, who fought for years to get public restrooms at the Aurora Village Transit Center, naturally checked out the facilities at the light rail stations.

The restrooms are designed to be unlocked remotely

There are two locked restrooms at each of the four new stations. I explored the ones at Lynnwood. There is a button to push and I was connected to a security person in downtown Seattle. I said I was at Lynnwood Station and wanted to enter the restroom.

"I could not understand the words from the speaker, but shortly the door was unlocked remotely. This is similar to the two restrooms at Northgate Station. There is also a drinking fountain at Lynnwood. . there was a security person on site to open the restrooms for the crowd, making sure there was no waiting."

Pat noted that the prettiest part of the ride was from north Shoreline to Lynnwood, with its trees and views.

"Between the Shoreline stations the views were often blocked by walls. We did not get to ride from Shoreline south to Northgate. From Northgate south to International District is underground so nothing to see there except for station lights. Then the rail surfaces and is above ground (with the exception of Beacon Hill} to Angle Lake at times rising and falling."

Volunteers spread mulch at Echo Lake Park

Volunteers at Echo Lake Park

Many thanks to everyone who came out and spread mulch on Tuesday.

Special thanks to Wendi Valle and her staff, Zach, Brendan and Chelsea, from State Farm Insurance, as well as Paul, Pat and Edith.

We got rid of almost all of the mulch pile, and the plants approve. We also seemed to find a spot where a coyote maybe comes to enjoy their prey. Last time it was a dead crow; this time it was what looked like an otter skull and part of its pelt. I'm not sure if there's another animal around here that would do that.

Also a reminder for lakeside dwellers -- as landscapers and home owners begin fall clean up: please do not blow yard debris into the lake. This releases phosphorus, which feeds the algae blooms. Please place into yard waste, so it can be safely taken away and composted.

Forgotten Union Veterans of the Civil War are honored in ceremony at Evergreen Washelli

Honor Guard by the Sons of the American Revolution

By Doug Cerretti

I had the distinct privilege to honor 29 veterans who served during time of war and 31 women who supported them at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home (11111 Aurora Ave N Seattle, WA 98133) on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

While we honor all veterans equally, these veterans are unique. For one, these cremated remains were unclaimed. We do not know the machinations that occurred when these veterans and spouses died but no one, not even family members claimed them.

Cremated remains of 29 Union Veterans of the Civil War and 31 Spouses

With the support of Dignity Memorial, parent company of Evergreen-Washelli, the Missing in American Project (MIAP) discovered these unclaimed cremains on shelves in the basement of local funeral homes.

After many research hours, volunteers from MIAP validated the identity of these cremains and that they were veterans.

As MIAP Vice-President Clyde Taylor said,
“Veterans signed a blank check to the United States when they enlisted which include payment up to and including their life. In return they are promised a dignified and honorable military burial.

"Through the effort of MIAP and Dignity Memorial, these unclaimed cremains are now claimed fulfilling that obligation.

"The finding of so many unclaimed cremains is sad but I believe even worse for those who have served our country."

This happens more often than many of us are aware of; two years ago, Dignity Memorial and MIAP reclaimed 123 veterans as was described in the Shoreline Area News

The other unique thing about these cremains is that they are Union veterans of the Civil War and their cremains have been unclaimed for over 100 years!

As the colors were carried in for the ceremony by the Washington National Guard, Ashokan Farewell was played.

Ashokan Farewell was written in 1982 by Jay Ungar and was played several times in Ken Burns’ PBS Civil War miniseries in 1990 and this song will forever be linked to the Civil War. The song tugs your emotions of loss, longing and sorrow as you think of those that fought in the War Between the States. (Listen to it here)

Each one was honored at the ceremony

Many Union veterans moved west after the war to start a new life away from the horrors they experienced and many of them traveled to Washington State.

They included George L. Camp (1835-1918) a soldier of the 92nd Ohio Infantry who survived being shot during the Battle of Missionary Ridge in 1863 and lived in Seattle until 1918, along with his wife, Ernestine.

William O'Neal (1846 - 1919) a soldier of the 45th Ohio infantry who was a survivor of the horrors of the notorious Andersonville prison camp.

Emeline Mattice (1831 - 1913), is representative of the toll taken by war on families and the home front. Her husband survived the war but he died shortly after. She lost her two brothers in the war, one died of disease in 1862 and another died in battle in Virginia just before Lee's surrender at Appomattox in 1865.

Richard Heisler from Civil War Seattle said that in 1880 there were 75 Union veterans in Seattle and by 1905 there were 2000 in King County and 3000 in Washington State, more per capita than any state in the Union. And here they lived the rest of their lives.

The last Seattle Union veteran, Hiram Randall Gale, passed away in 1951 at the age of 104.

On Thursday August 22, 2024, the claimed cremains of these Union veterans and their spouses were transported to Tahoma National Cemetery (18600 SE 240th St Kent, WA 98042) for their final honors and final resting place.

Their names were spoken as they were carried from the hearse individually or as husband and wife through an honor line of the Sons of the American Revolution.

The Union veterans were finally honored with a musket volley by the Historical 4th Infantry Regiment, taps by Debbie Dawson, Peninsula Veteran Honor Guard and Flag Folding Ceremony by the Washington Army National Guard.

As Matt Fox, Dignity Memorial, said, “It is long overdue that these veterans and their spouses are laid to rest and as we speak their names, they live a little longer with stories and memories of families we will never know.”
