Wednesday's show

Slowly the west reaches for clothes of new colors which it passes to a row of ancient trees.
You look, and soon these two worlds both leave you.
One part climbs toward heaven, one sinks to earth.
One moment your life is a stone in you, and the next, a star.

Phillippa Kassover announces retirement from Lake Forest Park City Council

LFP Councilmember Phillippa Kassover

Dear friends and neighbors,

I am very grateful for the ongoing support and encouragement of so many Lake Forest Park residents, local elected leaders, and regional organizations since I first announced my candidacy for the Lake Forest Park City Council eight years ago.

Thank you for your support and valuable input!

It has been my honor to serve and one of the most stimulating, fascinating, and worthwhile experiences of my life.

I have met so many talented public servants and passionate, engaged citizens who believe deeply in our democratic way of life, work every day to help make this a better place to live for all of us, and help care for our precious Northwest ecosystem.

It has truly been my privilege to work alongside them in these endeavors as we tackle the challenges before us.

It has been my special privilege to serve with a remarkable group of other LFP council members during the past eight years, all of whom have been generous with their time and talents, resolute and focused on the best interests of our city, and have served with exceptional civility and grace. No-one could ask for better colleagues!

However, it is now time for me to pass the torch and retire from public office to spend more time with my family who live close, and those who live far away.

I am making this as public an announcement as possible so that those in our community who have thought about how they might contribute or serve have the time to consult with family and friends to determine if local government might be their next step in life.

Filing week here in King County takes place May 15-19, followed by the primary election on August 1st, and the general election on November 7th. My term will end on December 31, 2023, and a new council member will begin on January 1, 2024.

The city of Lake Forest Park is blessed with a wealth of talented residents, and I am confident that our community will continue to be served by an exceptionally collegial and thoughtful council.

Sincerely,

Phillippa Kassover
Councilmember

Please touch the Art: Tactile Vision art exhibition at Graphite Arts Center in Edmonds

Graphite Gallery at Graphite Arts Center opened a “touchable” art exhibition "Tactile Vision" on March 25, 2023.

A true “hands on” exhibit, Tactile Vision is a unique, interactive art installation which focuses on the sense of touch to experience art.

Themes of nature and human form are explored throughout the exhibit in figurative and abstract ways.

Works in the show include three-dimensional sculptures in stone, wood and bronze, as well as low-relief pictures created using embossed paper. Tactile Vision is designed especially for those who are blind, or visually impaired. Artworks will be labeled in text and braille. Guide dogs are welcome.

The Gallery at Graphite welcomes visitors of all ages, sighted or blind, to “please touch the art.”

Tactile Vision would not have been possible without the insight and talents of curator and local artist Jim Ballard who has been working to create touchable images and books for the visually impaired for over 10 years.

Ballard provided valuable assistance to Graphite Gallery Director Tracy Felix in understanding the world of the visually impaired and planning an exhibition which would be meaningful and beautiful to both sighted and blind visitors.

Artists featured in Tactile Vision include: Jim Ballard, Mary Ann Tokars-King, Julie Perrine, Gary Word, Mike O’Day, Richard Hestekind, David Varnau and Tracy Felix.

Graphite Gallery is open Saturdays 12-4pm; daily 4-9pm with access through Charcoal Restaurant; and on Art Walk Third Thursdays April 20 and May 18, 5-8pm. Tactile Vision closes June 10.

For more information about Tactile Vision and upcoming associated events, as well as other happenings at Graphite, follow us on social media:
  • Facebook - Graphite Arts Center - Edmonds
  • Instagram - Graphite_Edmonds

Graphite is the home of the non-profit Art Start Northwest which was founded in 2015 to champion the creative process and to make art accessible to all.

Co-founder of Art Start Northwest Tracy Felix says, “Because it is entirely accessible through touch, Tactile Vision beautifully fulfills the mission of the organization by offering those in the visually impaired community with an impactful art experience often not available.”

Graphite Arts Center is Edmonds' newest facility dedicated to the arts. Graphite is a vibrant, active, multi-use arts center. Graphite Arts Center includes Graphite Gallery; art book library; classroom space; artist studios, and more.

Graphite hosts monthly movie nights and is open during Art Walk Edmonds on the third Thursday of the month. Graphite and Charcoal restaurant are both located at 202 Main Street, Edmonds WA 98020

County Assessor releases Taxpayer Transparency Tool for April Ballot

King County Assessor John Wilson today released his April 2023 general election Taxpayer Transparency Tool.

It is a website which provides each King County taxpayer an individualized accounting of where their property tax dollars go, and the estimated cost of any proposed property tax measure to be voted on.

“Taxpayers have a right to know where their money is going, and what each proposed property tax levy will cost them,” said Wilson.
“Property taxes keep going up. We need to make sure the public understands why.”

Property Tax Measures on the April Ballot:

All voters in King County will be asked to vote on King County Prop 1: Crisis Care Centers Levy; mental health and substance use disorder services -- a new levy to fund mental health and substance use disorder services.

The tool can be found at http://localscape.spatialest.com/#kingcountyassessor/Tax

There is also a link to the tool on the Assessor’s web page https://www.kingcounty.gov/depts/assessor.aspx

The Transparency Tool only shows the impact of property tax measures. Other ballot measures, including sales tax measures or benefit charges, are not included.

The Tax Transparency Tool was introduced by Assessor Wilson and first used during the April special election in 2018.

On the Menu at Le Petit Paquet: Change!

Le Petit Paquet photo by Wayne Pridemore
By Jamie Holter

It’s been just over a year since Le Petit Paquet opened in the old Streetzeria Pizza location in Richmond Beach on Richmond Beach Road at 20th Ave NW.

On the menu for year two? Change! And it’s all good.

Zephyr Paquette is the owner, a little dynamo package herself, just as her restaurant’s name implies.

In the last year, she’s stayed true to the excellent pizza we have come to expect and added a bit more: fresh ingredients from local farmers.

She dries her own herbs and continues to focus relentlessly on quality and tasty food.

Date night. Photo by Jamie Holter
But here’s what’s new.
Wednesday is Date Night!

$50 and tip includes a pizza + salad + a bottle of wine. What??? That’s amazing.

It’s not just any bottle of wine. Zephyr prides herself on carefully chosen wine, chosen with her best customers’ tastes in mind.

You can buy a bottle to take home with you from the retail wall, too.

On Fridays, she releases the “Fresh Sheet.”
The Friday night dinner menu goes beyond pizza to include Duck Confit or Halibut or Scallops, whatever is fresh at the moment.

Her summer burrata has roasted peaches, pickled cherries and white balsamic reduction. Yum. Oh, and lemon bars. Yes, the lemon bars.

She’s wrapping up work on the outside patio. Dogs are not only welcome, but enthusiastically so. (Her pup, Ziggy, herded me around the restaurant for a while then sat down, allowing me to scratch his shoulder for 10 minutes. Sorry, I was distracted by this adorable dog.)

Zephyr sees movie nights and outdoor dining
But wait, there’s more!

Zephyr is going to use the huge open space behind the restaurant to expand the eating area and show big screen movies over the summer.

Buy dinner (or her new “lunch box” concept), bring a blanket, and watch a movie.

That’s her plan and she hopes it is yours as well.

New tables for the back yard
The day I visited, she was sanding and priming two gorgeous pieces of wood that will soon become tables. She plans a bar out back too.

But it’s the staff who she is proudest of right now.

Every kitchen employee is 19 and under so she considers the workplace a teaching kitchen.

She knows the backstory of each student which was impressive.

So if you haven’t been to Le Petit Paquet in a while, consider a visit before summer.

Bring a date on Wednesday or your best dog anytime and definitely make a plan for a family or friends movie night with the big blow up screen between May and October.

Celebrate Earth Day by picking up litter in the Hillwood Neighborhood

It's time to sign up to clean up Hillwood Neighborhood in honor of Earth Day 2023!

In 2021, neighbors collected 385 gallons of trash.

Singles, couples, friends and families are all encouraged to join in (parents will sign wavers for younger kids at check-in).

Sign up by contacting George, HNA treasurer, and tell him your zone choices:

Choose your zone
You may collect trash in your own home zone, or if your zone has been claimed already, please accept another zone (or two!) to work in.

There will be two sign-in and turn-in locations: Hillwood Park and the Shoreline Park and Ride (see map). There is ample parking at both locations.

Kits including safety vests, litter pickers, buckets and gloves will be provided. Snacks and water will be available, too.

Please note: Litter collecting on Aurora Ave N should not include child helpers. Also, Richmond Beach Rd and 205th will have more trash and traffic than other roads in Hillwood.

Community Rummage Sale

Sunday, April 2, 2023

10 am – 2 pm
The Practicing Church

Come on out for a big community rummage sale and be a part of something good in the neighborhood!

The Practicing Church has been sorting through their stuff and is selling it all to raise money to share with neighbors in need. We've got lots of stuff in almost every category: including clothing, household items, toys, books, yard and garden, craft, holidays, and more!

All proceeds will go to Ronald Commons to provide move-in basics for neighbors setting up their apartments and moving from housing instability into affordable housing.

If you would like to donate to the sale, drop off items in good condition Saturday, April 1st from 10 am-12 pm.

The Practicing Church is a neighborhood church in Richmond Highlands committed to embodying love in the neighborhood for the flourishing of our place and all who live here. We believe that when we all come together to offer our gifts, there is an abundance and no one goes without. Be part of something good in the neighborhood.

Wild Horse building available for new tenant

A long, long, long time ago, maybe 18 years ago now, Richmond Beach had not one, but two, popular bars – the World Famous, 21+ Cabin Tavern and the kid-friendly Wild Horse Bar and Grill at 20th Ave NW and Richmond Beach road.

Some of us remember getting ice cream at the window outside the Wild Horse or celebrating the end of a Little League season with hot dogs inside or, for those old enough, playing a couple really smokey rounds of pool late into the night.

The Richmond Beach institution closed its doors for good in 2005 when King County voters passed the indoor smoking ban. In 2008,

I lived nearby and it was a hive of indoor construction activity.. but.. nothing. 2010 – more nothing. 2015 - more nothing. 2020 - more nothing. Then COVID and more nothing.

A new sign went up mid-March, it’s now “Available” and since then, there’s been non-stop talk about what might be happening next.

Turns out the local owner, who has had it for a few years now, wants to see a bit more life in Richmond Beach – yay! And they want to lease the space to a tenants or tenants for….??? The owner recognizes he needs to spend some money to make the place workable and he’s open to that.

So what would you like to see here? Put your response in the comments!

Lone tree at Richmond Beach

This beautiful tree stands alone at the top of the bluff - I believe it's on the upper trail.

I have heard hints that there's a history to this tree. Does anyone know?
