As If Theatre Company presents hilarious and timely comedy The Foreigner October 6-23 in Kenmore

As If Theatre Company (AITC) presents Larry Shue’s classic comedy The Foreigner October 6-23, 2022. This will be AITC’s sixth production since opening in 2019.

In this hilarious farce, Englishman Charlie Baker wants to escape his boring life and marital strife by disappearing to a fishing lodge in rural Georgia. Painfully shy, he begrudgingly adopts the persona of a foreigner who doesn't understand English.

Convinced he’s unable to understand them, the guests begin to speak freely around him. Charlie not only becomes privy to dangerous secrets, he also discovers an adventurous extrovert within himself. Under the direction of Ken Michels, AITC’s production embraces the undeniable humor in the script while acknowledging the prescient themes of the play.

“We love a solid comedy,” says AITC’s Artistic Director Cindy Giese French. “and this is one of the most solid comedies around. But this play can go so much deeper than just the laughs because it shines a light on what being considered an outsider really looks like in this country. We know it’ll be entertaining, but we also hope our audiences leave with a lot to talk about.”

The cast of The Foreigner includes Jason Gingold, Jalyn Green, Sonya Rose Usher, Cindy Giese French, Mike Tucker, John Clark, and Terry Boyd. Creative designers are Ken Michels (set design), Gwyn Skone (lighting design), and William French (sound design).

October 6-23, 2022
Opening Night – Thursday, October 6.
Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm. Sundays at 5:00pm
At the Kenmore Community Club
7304 NE 175th St, Kenmore, WA 98028

Kent man, leader of violent international drug ring, pleads guilty to Federal charges

Seattle – One of the leaders of a violent international drug trafficking organization that distributed heroin, fentanyl, and methamphetamine in the Puget Sound region pleaded guilty Monday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Seattle.

Jose Elias Barbosa, 37, of Kent, Washington, faces a mandatory minimum ten years in prison and up to life in prison when he is sentenced by U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour on December 13, 2022.

In his plea agreement, Barbosa admits he was one of the leaders of a transnational drug trafficking organization. Law enforcement has linked the organization to the CJNG cartel in Mexico.

In November 2019, the DTO received a shipment of liquid methamphetamine concealed in candles. Barbosa helped DTO members to extract the methamphetamine and cook it into crystal form at a Port Orchard, Washington location.

Barbosa was responsible for the distribution of at least 55 pounds of methamphetamine, 600 grams of heroin, and fentanyl throughout Western Washington and elsewhere.

Barbosa also pursued those who owed drug debts to the organization and possessed firearms during the drug conspiracy.

This effort is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation. OCDETF identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level criminal organizations that threaten the United States using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach. Additional information about the OCDETF Program can be found at www.justice.gov/OCDETF

The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Tacoma Resident Office in partnership with Tahoma Narcotics Enforcement Team (TNET), Kent Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, SeaTac Police Department, Thurston County Narcotics Team (TNT), the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Seattle Police responding to shooting at 145th / Aurora

Seattle Police at 145th shooting scene

Seattle Police reported at 12:30am Tuesday, August 30, 2002 that they were responding to a shooting at North 144th Street and Aurora Ave North. Two victims reported at this time.

Southbound Aurora was closed for the investigation, but has been cleared and is now open.

Seattle Police Chief Diaz
One of the victims in this incident, a 44 year old man, was declared deceased at the scene. Seattle Police Chief Diaz provided information on this shooting — and an unrelated earlier incident where a suspect shot at officers — at the scene.

He said that officers responded to a domestic violence call in the 13200 block of Linden Ave North, which resulted in the suspect shooting at the officers. They took him into custody.

While they were still on that call, they heard gunshots and got the call for a shooting at 143rd and Aurora.

When they arrived, one person was dead and the other, a 46 year old man, had minor injuries which were treated at the scene.

The case is under investigation by homicide and crime scene personnel. They are interviewing witnesses. If anyone has information to contribute, they are asked to call the Violent Crimes Tip Line at 206-233-5000.

Story and photos by Mike Remarcke

For the last 15 years of my career in communications, I worked with several large fire departments in the south end of Puget Sound, providing printing, photographic and design services to training, education and public relations departments for these fire fighting organizations.

Recently I have volunteered with the Shoreline Area News as a photojournalist, and have photographed several events with the Shoreline Fire Department both with the dedication of the new 63rd fire station on N 180th in North City and with their involvement with Covid vaccinations in various locations throughout Shoreline.

Recently I had the opportunity to be both a photojournalist and a “customer” of the Shoreline Fire Department in an action at a property my wife and I own.

I received a call from a neighbor telling me the storage unit in our multi-family complex was spewing smoke and that they had called 911. I stopped my pickleball game, jumped in the car and headed home to find several fire trucks and aid cars at the property.

I was very impressed as I watched the firefighters go through their routine, one step at a time, then finally enter the storage unit. In the meantime, other firefighters were looking throughout the complex to make sure there were no fire issues in other condos or garages.

The cause of the smoke and flames

Once in the storage unit, the firefighters quickly found the obvious cause of the fire. It was a halogen lamp fixture which had been left on and was too close to a kayak, resulting in smoldering smoke and limited flames.

The firefighters did their best not to hose down the entire unit, so other than smoke damage, most everything was intact. They were thoughtful in explaining the situation and were most pleased that so little damage was done and no one was harmed.

I was very impressed watching our Shoreline firefighters in action and have the utmost regard for the organization. We are fortunate to have a highly skilled organization protecting our property and health.

The John McCormick photo by Jan Hansen

Photo and Story by Jan Hansen

I looked for the Healey, and found the McCormick in Ketchikan.

Wikipedia:
USCGC John McCormick (WPC-1121) is the United States Coast Guard's 21st Sentinel-class cutter, and the first to be stationed in Alaska, where homeported at Coast Guard Base Ketchikan.

The vessel's manufacturer, Bollinger Shipyards, of Lockport, Louisiana, delivered the ship to the Coast Guard on December 13, 2016, for her acceptance trials, and then John McCormick was commissioned on April 12, 2017 in Ketchikan, Alaska.

And speaking of the Healy - check this out!

Adventures of an Icebreaker: The Healy is in the Arctic with the polar bears

Healy crew members gather to see the polar bear

Icebreaker Healy crew members were treated to the sighting of Ursus maritimus, a polar bear, on Saturday, August 20, 2022.

The polar bear was located a couple thousand yards off the port side of the ship and stayed there long enough for the crew to observe or take a long-distance photo.
