Goodbye to the Shoreline Pool

Demolition is well underway at the Shoreline Pool, 19030 1st Ave NE. The pool has been closed since fall of 2021 (see previous article).

Shoreline Public Works has contracted out for the demolition work. All of the usable equipment was taken out last year.
The pool was built by King County under a Forward Thrust bond issue in 1968. When Shoreline incorporated, the city council chose to have the pool transferred to the City of Shoreline and has maintained and run the pool ever since.
Mechanical systems began breaking down and parts to keep the pool running became increasingly hard to find.

The mural, created by Sara Snedeker in 2016, is painted directly on the wall and cannot be saved. (see previous article)

What a big loss for our community. Our city needs a pool.
There are a lot of public pools way older than this one was that are still in operation and not bankrupting the communities - we have a city council that only wants "new" and "where I say" and they will find reasons to make sure they get what they want. How about getting the Fircrest pool up and running? Oh wait - that's not on city-owned land.
The City Council could have saved it, but chose not to because it was on 1st NE rather than Midvale.
Unfortunate to see a community pool torn down. Probably cow towing to the pickleball crown again and tore it down to build PB courts. Well at least theyde get off the tennis courts.
This was handled much like the closing of Shoreline High School...what the public wants is of no interest to the people who decide these things. These buildings the community has grown to love are just numbers on a spreadsheet....
The staff brought new life into the pool. It is sad to see it go but we can only look towards the future. What kind of council do we want running the city? What can we do to make sure a new pool will be what the community really wants?
The plans for the new pool don't include any kind of warm water, spa, sauna or hot tub. Seeing the use of these pools by people of all skills, ages and those with special needs it is clear the Shoreline City Council needs to know the importance of including a warm pool for the health of the community.
