This, believe it or not, is also a Wood Duck -- just a mite more ornate than his mate:)

Gloria I was taught in school that bright plumage is defense mechanism designed to draw predators toward the male and thus away from the female and any nest. I'm not sure that really qualifies as a disparity given the negative connotation of the word.
