Pickpockets at Shoreline Safeway target 90 year old shopper

Pickpockets are sly and swift! But you can protect yourself.

The King county sheriff's office reports that on Friday, July 24, 2020, a 90 year old female was at Aurora Safeway located in the 15300 block of Aurora Ave N, Shoreline.

She remembers seeing her wallet inside her purse while shopping. At one point, she was reaching for an item on the bottom shelf with her back turned to her cart and believes someone stole her wallet out of her un-zipped purse. The victim didn't realize her wallet was gone until she went to pay for her groceries.

When the victim called to notify her bank that her credit cards were stolen, she learned that someone had already used the stolen cards at two different locations nearby.

Pickpockets usually work an area for a while and then move on.

Here are some tips so you will not be a target:
  1. Hold onto your purse at all times.
  2. If you have to set it down, set it in front of you where you can see it.
  3. Never leave it in your cart.
  4. Always keep the purse zipped or buttoned up so the contents inside cannot be easily taken.

Detectives are investigating the Shoreline incident, hoping to identify the suspect(s).

    1. First of all, not everyone is blessed with an extended group of loved ones. Second, on line shopping is more costly (I've used it). Third, see first.

    2. She has every right to go shopping without the fear of the unknown in that particular store.

    3. My father is 90. He doesn't have a computer nor internet access on his phone. Suggesting delivery isn't an option for these folks. My dad is in better shape than people 40 years younger. He lives independently & requires no assistance. We can only hope to be that independent as we age.

  4. I long for the day I should happen to see someone do that. I doubt they would consider ever doing that again.

  5. Firstly...why can't anyone shop anywhere without having to worry about someone taking what's not theirs? Who cares why she was there or when? What is wrong with people now that they steal from the elderly. Shame on them and their judgement day is coming.

  6. What planet are you people from that you would condone a 90 year old elderly person to shop alone without any assistance. That's like throwing the lamb to the wolves!

  7. I live right by that Safeway and I can positively state this as undisputable fact. Safeway stores are all running skeleton crews at all times. No help in the bakery or deli. No help at customer(dis)service. Not EVER enough checkers. These stores are SO UNDERSTAFFED that it has made shopping at Safeway stores a rather miserable experience. As a result there is , literally, no protection or deterrent whatsoever to prevent shoplifting or in store theft against vulnerable customers by the criminal element that has free run of the place every time a Safeway is entered. Safeway stores are not safe places to shop. Ownership is operating this American bastion of selection and bargain like a stripped down version of a third world 7-11. Safeway seriously needs to step up its' game to be able to compete in Americas' free market environment ! Because, right now, their business model of "profit by understaffing" is really pissing their lifelong customers off in a huge way ! Safeways' greedy corporate ignorance has created a "no consequences" crime zone inside their stores. So when shopping at Safeway. Bring a handgun for protection and bring a sleeping bag for comfort during the hours you'll spend waiting in the checkout line !

  9. Classic response "unknown" Not all 90 year olds are in a nursing home being cared for. This person has every right to shop without being a victim.

  10. It's just not the elderly pickpockets pray on.
I've got a co-worker friend who had her wallet lifted out of her purse at a funeral at the cemetery out of town.
