At least two Shoreline churches are reporting an email scam.
Church members receive an email purporting to come from the minister of their church. The "minister" tells them that a church member is in need of help and can they contribute?
The church member is asked to reply to the email (because the "minister's" phone is not working). Once hooked, they are asked to purchase a gift card and email the numbers to the "minister."
I read this article on Facebook. Our church in Mill Creek is currently experiencing a very similar scam. When someone sends our pastor an email, the sender receives a reply from a similar but different email address. This reply is customized to include reference to the topics in the original email and then asks the recipient to purchase credit or pay money to help out the pastor's niece (he doesn't have one). Does anyone have suggestions as to how to stop this?
ReplyDeleteWho on earth could have anticipated that religious folks would be singled out as particularly gullible and conditioned to believe their authoritarian leader to surrender money to them without any critical thought?
ReplyDeleteSeriously, who could've seen that coming?
