Power of One Volunteer Program given Community Leadership Award by WASA

The Power of One Volunteer Program, a partnership of the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center and Shoreline Public Schools, was presented a Community Leadership Award by the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) Region 110 (King County) at the group’s annual awards luncheon on Friday, May 17 at the Puget Sound Educational District in Renton.

The award is given “In Recognition of Outstanding Community Leadership and Contributions to the Improvement of Public Education.”

The Power of One Volunteer Program was nominated by School Superintendent, Rebecca Miner for their work and collaboration in placing volunteers throughout Shoreline schools.

“We were honored to be able to recognize this incredible group for their contributions to our schools and the educational support they provide to our students and teachers,” said Superintendent Miner.

The program, sponsored by the Shoreline Senior Center, has over 60 volunteers who work in classrooms with teachers and, most often, with students on a one-to-one basis to enhance their learning experience.

The volunteer program develops and supports senior citizen volunteers to serve in Shoreline elementary schools. The program, which has been in existence since 1996, matches volunteers to rewarding volunteer opportunities throughout the schools.

They recruit, train, mentor and support each of the volunteers to ensure they are successful in supporting all students. Their consistent presence in the classroom also allows the volunteers and students to build strong intergenerational relationships that enrich the lives of both.

Terry Monette, the Volunteer Coordinator, stated that “this has been a very successful year for the program. We have placed more volunteers and have had a very positive response from both teachers and students. 

"More importantly, I think the volunteers have had great joy in participating in the schools and interacting with both teachers and students."
