Whereas, a long-time resident of Seattle, Representative Ruth Kagi was elected in 1998 to represent the 32nd district in the Washington State legislature; and
Whereas, from 2002-2009 Ruth served on the Early Learning and Human Services Committee, acting as a fierce advocate for all Washingtonians; and
Whereas, a tireless advocate who has long believed that every child deserves to have asses to a quality education, Ruth sponsored the Early Start Act to expand access to early learning statewide; and
Whereas, throughout her service in the legislature, Ruth demonstrated time and again that every child deserves an equal right to succeed in life, and that their path should never be predetermined by income, race or background; and
Whereas, Ruth's colleagues attest to the way in which she actively shaped the way our state views early learning opportunities, and transformed the way these issues are addressed with a holistic approach; and
Whereas, with her retirement from the legislature in January, the City of Seattle remembers how lucky we are to call Representative Ruth Kagi a friend and ally as we work together to support our children and create the most vibrant and inclusive region possible;
NOW, THEREFORE I, JENNY A. DURKAN, MAYOR OF SEATTLE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM MARCH 22, 2019 TO BE
REPRESENTATIVE RUTH KAGI DAY
"So pleased to be honored at the Wellspring lunch today, and given a proclamation from Mayor Durkan for Rep Ruth Kagi day. It is awesome to work with such outstanding organizations like Wellspring to give all children the opportunity to succeed." --Rep. Ruth Kagi
Rep. Kagi served the 32nd Legislative District from Lake Forest Park, then from Seattle after redistricting put Lake Forest Park into the 46th Legislative District. She served the City of Shoreline for her entire legislative career.
