Unprecedented Snowfall Forces Re-Alignment of 54th Annual State High School Varsity Bowling Championships February 16-17, 2019
For the first time in its 54 year history, the annual Washington State Bowling Proprietors’ Association (WSBPA), State High School Varsity Bowling Championships will be split into two separate events due to the severe weather challenges being faced statewide.
The re-aligned event will crown Eastern and Western Division Champions Saturday and Sunday, February 16-17, 2019, at Paradise Entertainment Center in Tacoma and Lilac Lanes in Spokane.
A total of 20 five-person teams will compete in two divisions with 10 teams competing at each of the 32 lane centers, along with 46 bowlers competing in a singles event. The event will take place over two days to crown Eastern and Western Washington Champions. Teams qualified for the State Championships based on their order of finish in regional leagues held statewide between November 1st and January 31st.
More than 1,000 student athletes statewide participated during the bowling season. Now in its 54th year, this is the 2nd longest running High School Bowling Championship in America, following only New York.
Teams from both Shorecrest and Shorewood will bowl five 4 game Baker format matches on Saturday beginning at 10:00am in Tacoma. Teams return Sunday morning at 9:00am to bowl five additional matches with total points won over the two days determining the State Champions.
Bowlers entered in the singles event will roll seven games of qualifications (4 on Saturday and 3 on Sunday), to determine champions East and West.

“The safety of the students and their parents was our first priority,” declared WSBPA President Robert Hanson, owner of Tower Lanes and Paradise Entertainment Center in Tacoma.
“The closures of the mountain passes and the likely of additional snowfall were contributing factors,” added Hanson, who assisted on several conference calls to coaches, parents and bowling center owners over the past two days.
