185th Street corridor planning process and street trees

Beginning October 20, the City of Shoreline will be engaging with the community in a year-long effort to develop at 185th Street Corridor Strategy. We will look at how to best create a corridor that is safe for pedestrians and bicyclists; supports bus and light rail transit service; addresses traffic congestion; creates gathering spaces; and encourages neighborhood businesses. Included in those discussions will be street trees, both existing ones and new ones that may be planted.

At this point, no decisions have been made on the corridor design nor on the street trees. We will soon begin the planning process with a series of kickoff events from October 20 to October 25 to discuss existing conditions, learn about future transportation needs, and for residents to provide feedback.

Residents who are unable to attend any of the events will still be able to provide comments online after October 25 at shorelinewa.gov/185corridor. 

In 2015, City Council adopted the 185th Station Subarea Plan. The next step in preparing for the arrival of light rail is to develop a corridor design connecting Aurora/Town Center to North City via 185th Street, 10th Avenue, and 180th Street. During the subarea planning process, the City and community created an initial design concept for the corridor, including illustrations of how it could be applied on 185th and 180th Streets. Through the current 185th Street Multimodal Corridor Strategy process, we will work with the community to create additional designs and compare them against each other.

In spring 2019, we will engage the community in a dialog about the pros and cons of each design option including discussions about the impacts and benefits to street trees, utilities, pedestrians, bicyclists, cars, and transit service. The goal is to determine the optimal design and plan how to implement a cohesive corridor that works better for everyone.
