Snohomish Summer Smash presented by Westra Sports returns in July

The Snohomish Summer Smash, a three-day tournament for high school players ages 14-18, returns to the Snohomish High School Tennis Courts July 20th-22nd.

Registration costs are $30 for Singles players and $50 per Doubles and Mixed Doubles teams, with proceeds going to the Snohomish HS Tennis Teams. This year marks the first with Westra Sports of Everett as the tournament’s Premier Sponsor; locally owned and operated, Westra offers Summer and Winter outdoor equipment, and will once again host a tent at the tournament with tennis merchandise and demo equipment.

Tournament Director Kraig Norris, in conjunction with Snohomish High School Coach Dick Jansen, formed the tournament in 2015 to counter the lack of competitive options for players who aren’t registered with the US Tennis Association.

“Tennis, like golf, is a sport that really requires year-round honing of skills,” said Norris, “and too many players aren’t playing outside of the high school season, and it’s affected the level of play.”

Creating the tournament, Norris and Jansen reached out to high school coaches and tennis clubs throughout the North Sound, and it seems to have paid off; last year’s tournament saw a 25% increase in registrations, with 73 players from 20 high schools taking part. This year’s High School State Tournaments included thirteen Summer Smash alums, including seven who medaled.

Deadline to register for this year’s tournament is July 9th, and players interested in participating can email the tournament director at kraignorris1@yahoo.com for a registration packet, or go to the website
