“While the operation has been an asset to the community, it has unfortunately had difficulty generating positive or neutral operating loss over the last few years,” said Deputy Superintendent Marla Miller.
“Projections for the current fiscal year indicate the cumulative deficit will grow to $250,000, which has a significant impact on the District’s general fund as it has to cover the deficit.”
The Conference Center’s rooms and spaces will continue to be utilized by the District for its own needs, including housing all its early learning programs for a few months while the new Early Learning Center is being constructed. The programs’ students and staff will occupy most of the south end of the building and a few rooms in the north end from July through December of this year.
After the early learning programs move into their new school, the District will seek long-term leases for the available spaces on the south end of the building.
The Shoreline Room and other north end rooms will continue to be utilized by the District and their internal partners, but will not be available for rent to outside groups.
The auditorium will continue to be available for rental to outside groups.
Miller also noted that the District has been incredibly grateful for all of the community groups and organizations that have used the Conference Center for their gatherings over the years. “In part, the timing of this change provides us the opportunity to reassign Conference Center staff to comparable positions elsewhere in the district that will soon be vacant due to staff retirements,” said Miller.
