Letter to the Editor: School board members from Edmonds and Seattle endorse Fralick
Sunday, November 5, 2017
Update: See clarification to letter headline
To the Editor:
We enthusiastically recommend Shoreline parent and community college teacher Heather Fralick for the Shoreline School Board. She is running in District 2 and has already proven her ability to identify and lead on important issues -- such as advocating for the state to fulfill its constitutional duty to fully fund K-12 public education (McCleary Decision) and asking the tough questions to address the projected budget deficit of the district.
An analyst by profession, she wrote her MA thesis on education policy and worked for a non-profit research company that designed more efficient and responsive governments (including schools) for local residents. She worked for the City of Kirkland in the Economic Development office and served on Shoreline’s Economic Development Advisory Committee.
She understands the importance of multiple pathways to graduation, equity and inclusion, and safety for every student among other important matters. She has a child in Shoreline Public Schools, and will listen to, advocate for and support communities, families, and educators who are the key stakeholders in public education. She has been endorsed by the National Women’s Political Caucus, King County Labor Council, Equal Rights Washington, King County Democrats, State Sen. Maralyn Chase, and State Representatives Cindy Ryu, Gerry Pollet and Javier Valdez.

She'll ask the hard questions that need to be asked.
This is a very misleading headline. The letter writers are, as far as I can tell, a former Seattle School Board member and a current Edmonds School Board member. Neither have connection to the Shoreline School Board, which is what this election is about. In fact, Ms. Fralick's opponent, Jill Brady, has the sole endorsement of retiring Shoreline Board President Debi Ehrlichman and 4 former Shoreline School Board members including Maren Norton, Patti Giboney, Judy Parsons and Herb Bryce. I don't doubt that Ms. Chase and Ms. Soriano believe strongly in their candidate, but they are not representative of the school community we live in and are electing a representative for.
The title of this letter is totally erroneous and I am disappointed that the Shoreline Area news would publish it as written. Nowhere in the letter is the name of a school board member mentioned as a supporter. In fact, as far as I am aware, I am the only board member who has endorsed any candidate, Jill Brady, since I am retiring my seat. Other board members would appropriately stay publicly neutral in this election. I would also point out that neither of the authors listed live in the Shoreline School District. Please join me, a 40 year community member, volunteer, and 12 year board member and elect Jill Brady for Shoreline School Board.
I am appalled at the inaccuracy of the title of this letter to the editor. It claims that school board members endorse this candidate. But who are these board members - no one is named in the letter. To my knowledge, I am the ONLY school board member publicly endorsing a candidate (Jill Brady) and then only because I am retiring my seat in December. It is entirely inappropriate for any other continuing board member to publicly endorse any candidate. I am disappointed in the Shoreline Area News for printing this letter without fact checking first. In addition, please note that the authors of this letter are not even residents within our Shoreline and Lake Forest Park communities. Please join me - a 40 year resident of LFP, long-time community volunteer and 12 year school board director - in electing Jill Brady to the Shoreline School Board. She is a person of integrity, the kind of leader our school district needs to continue the good work of education our children.
I am a current Shoreline School Board Director and I have not publicly endorsed either candidate in the race between Jill Brady and Heather Fralick. To my knowledge none of the other Board members other than Debi have made any endorsements either. This article should be retracted immediately as it is totally misleading and untrue!
Shame on Shoreline Area News for not retracting or correcting the headline as soon as they were notified of the inaccuracy!
Dick Potter, Shoreline School Board
Thank you Diane Hettrick for clarifying that the headline to the letter to the editor was not part of the original letter submitted. When we submitted the letter to the editor we did include our school district affiliations identifying the authors as former and current school board members.
We appreciate the great work you do in providing this valuable source of information for the community.
Best,
Carin
The follow up article is here: http://www.shorelineareanews.com/2017/11/from-editor-confusion-over-letter.html The headline was mine, not the letter writers. I thought that people would look at their cities and figure out the reference was to other school boards, but that was obviously wrong. Sorry for the confusion. - Editor
Fralick earned this election. Nice work,Heather.
