Letter to the Editor: Vines are destructive

To the Editor:

I was appalled when vines were planted to grow over the decorative cement walls at this location. (see previous article)

The walls are beautiful showing seashore life in 3D. The vine suckers clinging to the walls will eventually destroy the design. If this was the original plan why were the walls created with this design. Certainly plain walls would have saved us a lot of money.

    Yet another chapter in the monstrous, expensive bridge that hardly gets used.

    Boston Ivy and Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus) are not in the same family as English Ivy (Hedera). They attach themselves to surfaces using small suction cups on their stems and DO NOT cause damage to concrete or masonry. Whereas, English Ivy, which uses roots to work their way into cracks, DOES damage walls over time. These plants are Parthenocissus.
