Letter to the Editor: Keith McGlashan responds to opponent's comments

Keith McGlashan's Shoreline City Council opponent has been making extensive use of the "comments" section. McGlashan has been given this opportunity to respond. Editor.

To the Editor:

It’s too bad that my opponent for Shoreline City Council used the Shoreline Area News to spread misinformation about Richmond Beach Road and my position on the Point Wells development; here are the facts. In 2011 I voted to re-designate Richmond Beach Road from a roadway that allows 10,000 car trips per day downgrading it to a roadway that allows only 4,000 car trips per day. The city council vote was unanimous, and that restriction stands in place still.

The developer would be required to perform significant road improvements at their expense for the city council to reconsider our designation and allow more trips per day, and provide proof of a funding source for those improvements. That seems highly unlikely if not impossible, and even if the developer made such a proposal, the council would still have the opportunity to vote.

Anyone can find these facts by going to the city website and searching Richmond Beach Road Ordinance, and here is a link.

My opponent attended candidate forums and heard my position on minimizing the Point Wells development and its impacts; I hope she sticks to the true facts as we move forward in this important campaign.

  1. I appreciate this discourse, all the letters to the editor, the transparency, and debate. It's nice to have this expansion on topics in addition to the voter's pamphlet. I appreciate the passion for opinions and platforms to be discussed. With all the turmoil in the nation right now, it gives me a spark of hope that we still have the freedom online, in person, or phone, or in writing to discuss and debate passionately.

If you're feeling hopeless about the state of the world right now, take solace in this right that we often take for granted. We will get through this.

  2. Keith, you also became a realtor while voting to rezone a major percentage of Shoreline. You have voted time after time for developers, while citizens asked you to scale back the rezones.

  3. Keith, if this is true, why is the developer still proposing 3000+ condos and 10,000+ extra trips per day? Why are they not required to scale down the project immediately if they haven't proposed a solution to increasing traffic with road improvements. Until I read that the proposal has been drastically scaled back, I will believe that we're destined to be swallowed up by Point Wells.

  4. Keith doth protest too much, there are many sketchy actions that the City of Shoreline has undertaken while he has been Mayor and/or Councilmember. For example, how much money was wasted on the abortive effort to purchase Seattle Public Utilities water supply, at an unrealistically low price from the City of Seattle, while his friend Mike McGinn was the Seattle Mayor? The utilities unification doesn't pencil out for the ratepayers without Seattle Public Utilities, but the City of Seattle has to receive the market value of the system as their responsibility to their ratepayers and bondholders.
