Letter to the Editor: Evan McMullin is a clear choice for a brighter future

To the Editor:
For many voters, especially Republicans, November 8 can't come soon enough. An election season that once held such promise, with more than a dozen candidates seeking the GOP nomination, has become a profound disappointment, as has party nominee Donald Trump.
Some support Trump because his message, however incoherent and divisive, appeals to them. Far more support him because they oppose Hillary Clinton and deem Trump the lesser of two evils. But this is a false choice.
Evan McMullin, an independent Republican, is an approved write-in presidential candidate in Washington. He's a principled conservative who has been a missionary, a CIA operative, an investment banker, and an advisor to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. In a time of bombast and braggadocio, McMullin speaks with humility, reverence, and hope.
Committed to free markets, the U.S. Constitution, strong national defense, the right to life, and the opportunity to pursue lives of dignity and purpose, McMullin rewards the faith of conservatives and Republicans who refuse to settle for a candidate whose behavior and beliefs belie the values that have historically defined them.

It is endlessly bewildering that the lessons of history don't resonate strongly enough in my neighbors minds to break them of the idea that a vote for third party presidential candidates is anything more than a faint and inconsequential protest. It's certainly hard to argue that voters should not be able to choose the candidate who most closely represents their values. However, when we're talking about the presidential race, none of us has that option. Neither real progressives who hold their nose and vote Hillary, nor Republicans who are choosing to close their eyes and ears and scratch out the bubble next to Trump. A vote for Gary Johnson ('What is Aleppo?') or Jill Stein (let's have the president unilaterally forgive student debt ignoring how the law works) or McMullin is not a vote for the candidate who best represents your values. It is an irresponsible, childish protest vote that will not be heard or respected on the national stage. It will only leave you in a position to have to apologize for your vote and explain why you chose inaction when faced with the nightmare of a race-baiting, reprehensible, hard right man-child assuming the presidency of the world's foremost nuclear power. Please don't throw your vote away thinking you're honoring your principles. That's not how presidential elections work yet.
