LFP Budget Town Hall Meeting on October 10, 2016 cancelled
At the September 29, 2016 meeting of the Council Budget and Finance Committee, the Budget Town Hall meeting scheduled for 6:00pm on Monday, October 10, 2016, was cancelled.

Post 227 dinner meeting Tuesday
The meeting will be held at the Post 227 building at 14521 17th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155.
Officers of The American Legion, 11th District, will attend the subsequent meeting, which starts at 7:00pm.
The Honor Flight program will be featured. Our post member, Dr. Guy Boswell, a WWII vet, will tell about his recent honor flight, including how he made application, how travel arrangements were made and the experiences he had at our nation’s capital.
While you are at the meeting, you can check out the new Post Library that includes a large collection of militarily related books, video tapes and DVDs. Any of these can be checked out, used and returned by post members without charge.
All military veterans and their guests are welcome. We hope to see you at the meeting.

Portland resident D'Anne Davis will give an eye-witness report on the Native American protest at Standing Rock, ND, to protect the Missouri River aquifer from oil spills.
The report will be followed by public discussion about the protest as well as protecting our own waters from oil spills due to derailments and shipping.

However, remember the poet's lines: Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying.
Don't worry about the rest of the poem, it's really sexist and somewhat depressing. Focus on the lovely yellow rose.

Warm-ups start at 8:00 and they start running at 8:10am.
This Saturday is the Lower Woodway route. This route has lots of variety and choices that can eliminate some miles and hills.
You can make it as short as 3 miles or as long as 10.

The crews from Station 51 were invited to attend Evelyn LaBorn’s big party on Saturday afternoon.
Evelyn and Harvey LaBorn have lived in Kenmore since 1946. Harvey was a volunteer firefighter in Kenmore for 30 years, starting in 1949. Evelyn was one of Kenmore’s first 911 dispatchers and would answer the phone at their home when emergency calls came in.
The Northshore Fire Department celebrates Evelyn’s special day and her service to our community!

Summer residency program for high school juniors at Museum of Flight
Phase One of the WAS program runs from December 2016-May 2017 and consists of a NASA and UW designed online curriculum that focused on space and space travel and provides college credit for scholars.
Students can earn acceptance into Phase Two, a six-day Summer Residency at The Museum of Flight in June or July 2017. During their residency, students will design a human mission to Mars guided by aerospace professionals, tour engineering facilities, and compete in hands-on engineering challenges.
The WAS program is open to high school juniors throughout Washington. Applicants must be US Citizens and Washington State Residents. The student deadline for the 2016-17 cycle is November 4, 2016.
Washington math and science teachers are also invited to apply as Online Academic Evaluators from December to May and Summer Residency Facilitators for one six-day session in either June or July. Stipends, 60 clock hours, and all room/board and travel expenses are provided to participating teachers. The 2016-17 deadline for teacher applications is November 4, 2016.

Masha knows all kinds of stuff about Baba Yaga:
* She lives in a house that walks around on chicken legs.
* She flies around at night in a mortar and pestle.
and most of all
* She eats naughty children (or turns them into goldfish).
But the stories also say that a girl who works hard to complete all the chores she assigns will earn a fine (and probably magical) reward.
So when Masha's dad brings home a new wife and stepdaughter, Masha doesn't hesitate: she heads for the woods, and seeks out the walking house. Baba Yaga doesn't hand out easy tasks. Masha needs all of her courage and ingenuity to avoid being eaten. And at the end of the story...

Shoreline Cooperative Preschool Fundraiser – Open to the Public, Free entry, Indoor event
Grab your costume and join Shoreline Cooperative Preschool for their 29th annual Halloween Carnival and Silent Auction - Saturday, October 22 from 10 am – 2 pm.
Each year SCP hosts this fun-filled (non-scary) carnival geared towards kids ages 1-8.
This indoor event is open to the public with free admission. Tickets for carnival games are just 4 tickets for $1.00. The silent auction will run throughout the day featuring exciting items and services for the whole family donated by local businesses.
All proceeds from the event support Shoreline Cooperative, a non-profit preschool.

Reserve a seat for the first Shorewood Culinary Arts dinner
The Culinary Arts program at Shorewood puts on a series of fund-raising dinners during the school year, each headed by an industry chef who supervises a team of students.
The series of Chef dinners will begin with a long time colleague and supporter of the program, Chef Shubert Ho of Bar Dojo and Salt and Iron, both located in Edmonds.
The dinner is scheduled for Thursday, October 27th at 6pm. The cost of the dinner is $40.00 per person and will be held in three locations at the school, 17300 Fremont Ave N, Shoreline 98133.
Money raised at these events fund Culinary Arts education, including the purchase of new kitchen equipment, teaching materials, field trips, student Chef coats and garden supplies.
Those who have attended a previous dinner should note that the payment method has changed and they are using Brown Paper Tickets for all reservations. Purchase the number of seats you would like at this link.
Another change is that each chef dinner will open for reservations approximately one month prior to the dinner. We are no longer taking reservations for more than one dinner at a time. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes, but it will help us to maintain a proper count and allow the district accounting department to better balance the cash flow.
The next dinner is scheduled for January 26, 2017 with Executive Chef Breanna Beike of the Seattle Yacht Club.

New artwork at Town Center Park
Residents may notice some of the artwork at Town Center Park changing as the one-year loan program comes full circle and some work leaves while new work arrives. For the next year the park will have John Zylstra’s “Tsunami Memorial” and Ken Turner’s “Dancer.”

“Tsunami Memorial” commemorates the Fukushima Nuclear Accident, triggered by a massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Inspired by the remnant structures left behind by the disaster, Zylstra created a towering, lantern-like artwork with windows reminiscent of shoji screens.
In keeping with the battered and eroded surfaces of surviving buildings, he also gave the sculpture a weathered look, complete with rust patina and industrially battered pendulum in the middle, which also functions as a bell (a wooden mallet is attached to one of the legs). A solar element is designed to make it glow with light at night.

Turner’s “Dancer” evokes a sense of stop-motion photography with its series of outlines that seem to capture the spirit of a dancer in motion, dress swinging out to one side. Whimsical and playful, with shiny stainless steel, the “Dancer” offers a contrast to “Tsunami Memorial” and helps create a range of scale and style at Shoreline’s Town Center Park.
Town Center Park is on the Interurban Trail in front of City Hall, between Aurora and Midvale from 175th to 185th.

Washington state awarded grant to support growth of charter schools
The Department’s Charter Schools Program (CSP), which provides funding for high-quality public charter schools, awarded the grant. It will total $6,973,684 during the next three school years, starting in 2016-17.
“We know from the Supreme Court’s McCleary decision that schools aren’t being funded equitably by the state,” said Randy Dorn, superintendent of public instruction.
“And that includes our charter schools. They are relatively new for us and they need support and guidance to meet their goals. If the state is going to have charter schools, we need to make sure they are given the resources they need to keep providing high-quality education to their students. The grant will help that happen.”
The grant’s purpose is to support the growth of new, high-quality public school options, including charter schools, across the state. That will be done through additional professional development and for curricula and classroom materials, as well as for financial assistance to planning, design, and initially implement new charter schools in Washington.
“The law doesn’t allow for the spending of local levies on charter schools,” said Joshua Halsey, executive director of the Washington state Charter School Commission. “This money will help those schools increase student achievement of students attending charter schools, especially educationally disadvantaged students who have historically struggled in traditional public school settings.”
The grant will be administered by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, the State Board of Education, the Charter School Commission and Spokane Public Schools.

Crews are currently excavating and leveling surfaces on the site to make way for a new playfield that will provide the school and community with athletic and recreational opportunities for many years to come.

The project, which is expected to be complete this December, will include a new synthetic turf playfield, basketball backboard and pole, picnic tables, benches and wood fiber safety surfacing.
The $1.4 million project is being funded by a bond approved by Shoreline Public Schools voters in 2006.

Apply now for LFP Holiday Crafts Fairs at Town Center – due Oct 5

The deadline for vendor applications for the upcoming Holiday Crafts Fairs at Lake Forest Park Town Center is fast approaching, and artists and crafters are encouraged to apply now to be a part of this exciting, annual tradition.
This year’s Holiday Crafts Fairs will be held from 10am to 3pm on Sunday, November 20 and Sunday, December 18 so that shoppers can get a jump on Black Friday shopping and pick-up those last-minute Christmas and Hanukkah gifts. Each craft fair will be held in conjunction with special fall Lake Forest Park Farmers Markets.
All applications must be received by Wednesday, October 5th and only complete application packets will be considered. Washington artists and crafters of all kinds are encouraged to apply and share their work with our community. Applications, full instructions, and more information about the fairs can be found at ThirdPlaceCommons.org.

Bold and Fiery Floral Arrangements for Fall
$75.00Students will learn to design a low, oblong floral centerpiece with seasonal flowers. We will use a combination of fresh flowers, as well as some permanent materials to create a long lasting centerpiece that would be appropriate for a table decoration.
Flower Identification, care, handling and preparation procedures to make fresh flowers last longer will be discussed. Use of floral tools, such as knives, scissors and floral clippers and proper cleaning of containers will also be discussed.
Step by step instruction as well as written instructions will be used as class source materials. All floral materials will be supplied and students will take home a completed arrangement. Students should bring a floral knife, scissors and clippers to the class.

Wing and his 14-year old son, Tony, were body surfing when he was hit by a large wave. He hit his head on the ocean floor sustaining life threatening injuries.
Wing was knocked unconscious before being found by his son moments later, lifeless and unresponsive.
After a fund-raising drive guaranteed the payment, he was brought to Seattle on a fully-staffed medical flight and taken to Harborview via Shoreline Fire.
He was paralyzed, able to move only one toe. He had several surgeries to relieve pressure on the spine.
Two months ago, still in Harborview, he was able to fully extend his right leg from the knee while sitting in his wheelchair and able to grasp with one hand, a positive sign.
A month later, he continued to show progress with mobility and had even begun to regain some slight movement on his left side, while continuing to strengthen his right side.
His personality was irrepressible. According to Tracy Cooper, who set up the GoFundMe site,
"Wing does not take himself too seriously and the accident has not hampered his sense of humor in the least bit. He had us laughing the entire time while recounting his antics with the nurses and student nurses at Harborview.
When not in therapy, Wing wheels his chair around the floor and visits others who have suffered similar injuries, providing encouragement and no doubt laughs as well."
Five days ago, Tracy wrote about the family's frustration with the medical insurance. Woo had been transferred to a rehab facility to learn how to live at home, paralyzed, in a wheelchair.
"Wing has been transferred twice in the last three weeks to two different care facilities. Unfortunately, neither has provided the level of care needed and, in some cases, not even the most basic of needs were met."
The family found an appropriate facility, but insurance refused to pay and the family is paying out of pocket. They also found that insurance does not pay for the medical equipment needed for him to live at home.
Meanwhile, Tracy says, "Wing continues to be Wing. He fights to get better every day. He works hard in therapy every day. His family is thankful for every small sign of progress and improvement."
The current rehabilitation center is working with Wing to encourage him to move his wheelchair by using his hand controls instead of blowing into a straw.

State’s top lawyer files three new court actions against Tim Eyman
Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced Monday the filing of campaign finance complaints against Tim Eyman, three political committees, and their officers and treasurer. The AG alleges that shoddy accounting practices and improper disclosure of the source of funds for the committees and their ads violated Washington law.
Three separate cases were filed late Friday in Thurston County Superior Court against the political committees, their principals — Eyman, Jack Fagan and Mike Fagan — as well as their treasurer, Barbara Smith.
“Washington’s campaign finance laws require, and Washingtonians deserve fair, accurate and timely disclosure,” Ferguson said. “When political committees create confusion rather than transparency, I will hold them and the people in charge accountable.”
One complaint alleges that the “Tougher to Raise Taxes” committee improperly repaid loans totaling over $1 million it received from Eyman and three individuals, because it lacked any kind of written loan agreement and failed to report in-kind contributions it received from other committees in the form of interest payments.
The second complaint alleges that committee “Bring Back Our $30 Car Tabs” violated state disclosure laws by failing to file an independent expenditure report disclosing its spending on campaign ads against candidates who had opposed a separate Eyman-backed initiative. The complaint also alleges that the committee failed to accurately disclose $3,297.75 in interest payments it made on a loan for “Tougher to Raise Taxes.”
A third complaint alleges the “2/3rds-for-Taxes Constitutional Amendment” committee failed to accurately disclose a $599.66 interest payment it made on a loan for “Tougher to Raise Taxes.”
The complaint also alleges that the committee failed to account properly for all contributions it received.
Senior Assistant Attorney General Linda Dalton and Assistant Attorney General Chad Standifer are handling the cases for the state.
Since becoming Attorney General, Attorney General Ferguson has devoted more agency resources and a full-time attorney position to campaign finance casework.
Regional Orchid Show at Swansons Nursery in Seattle Nov 5-6

This is a regional show that will feature displays by orchid societies and vendors from throughout the Pacific Northwest who will be competing for coveted American Orchid Society awards.
There will also be talks on various aspects of orchid growing Saturday and Sunday afternoons and a free repotting service.
There will be several orchid vendors from Washington and Idaho who will be selling orchids not found in common outlets. Free door prizes will also be awarded throughout both days.
Orchid hobbyists will be on hand to answer questions. A complete list of vendors and their specialties plus speakers and times will be posted at the society’s website and Facebook page
The NWOS is a regional organization with members throughout the Puget Sound area. It meets the second Monday of every month at 7pm from September through June at the Center for Urban Horticulture (near University Village: 3501 NE 41st St., Seattle). Meetings are open to the public.

6X6NW submissions are due Friday, September 30, so don't miss your chance to take pART in this exciting exhibition and sale of miniature artworks to support the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council.
Each artwork must be 6”x 6” and artists may enter up to 10 artworks of any medium (2D or 3D). There is no fee to enter and participation is open to all — no art background required! All entries will be exhibited during 6X6NW on October 8 and offered for sale to the public for $36 each. Artists can choose to take a 34% commission or donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of their work to benefit future Arts Council programming.
Prizes will be awarded in several categories, including People's Choice, and participants will receive 6 free tickets to the event (a $60 value), 1 drink ticket (a $6 value), and recognition on the Art Council’s website.

Friday’s Roundtable: Transferable and Soft Skills
Soft skills is a term often associated with a person's "EQ" (Emotional Intelligence Quotient), the cluster of personality traits, social graces, communication, language, personal habits, interpersonal skills, managing people, leadership, etc. that characterize relationships with other people.
Other examples of soft skills: Communicating well verbally, as well as non-verbally. Making good decisions. Adaptability. Problem solving. Commitment, Flexibility, Time Management.
There are even more, and we’ll touch on a few this Friday, with Shoreline Senior Center volunteer and longtime Roundtable contributor, Ed Cruver.
Do you react when criticized, or calmly consider the criticism? How well do you handle pressure? Do you see things from other’s perspectives?
Ed will cover this and more, and of course we’d love to hear your own examples of soft skills and how best to put them to work.

LaVon D. Price 1925-2016 Married in 1945 and moved to Shoreline. Active in PTA, winning the Golden Acorn, also involved with the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Beta Sigma Phi. Loved cooking and camping.
Patricia Ann Emory Age 87 Moved to Shoreline in 1959 and raised her family here. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to one of her favorite charities, including the Shoreline Historical Museum.
Bronwen M. Nightingale-Daehnke 1954-2016 Graduated from King's Garden High School in Shoreline.
Norman R. Hansen 1927-2016 Norm grew up in Richmond Beach and served as an Army paratrooper in Occupied Japan in 1946-47. He was a school teacher in the Shoreline School District for 27 years, moved to Lake Forest Park in 1973, and retired 1985. He wrote "Stories of Richmond Beach" and "Stories of a Paratrooper in Occupied Japan" and had his local photo collection and family history at normanrhansen.com. Family suggests remembrances to Shoreline Historical Museum.
Virginia R. (Dyson) Kent 1922-2016 She was a long distance operator when she married and moved to Shoreline around 1944. They were very involved with their children's activities. She was a member of a Children's Orthopedic Guild, Emblem Club, and Tin Crafters Club. She loved making crafts and was a huge Seattle Mariners fan.
Helen Marie Oltman 1926-2016 She was raised in Richmond Beach. She met her husband at Lincoln High School and they built a home in Richmond Beach, and later a second home in Shoreline. She worked for the Shoreline School District for many years. She dedicated countless hours creating exhibits for the Shoreline Historical Museum. In 2004, with her granddaughter, LisaMarie Brems, she created and dedicated an informational sign overlooking the bluff of her beloved Richmond Beach. The family suggests remembrances to the Shoreline Historical Museum.
Lorraine Slingsby Atwood 1918-2016 She was very involved with the 46th District Democratic party and attended the 1972 Democratic convention. An avid skier, she volunteered and worked for ski organizations. She worked ski races and organized ski trips. She was a member of the Ancient Skiers Club and a member of the Sahalie Ski Club for 59 years. A celebration of life was held at the Shoreline Elks.
Jean Gleason Witt 1921-2016 A botanist, Jean lived in Shoreline for 50 years, raising her family here. She was a member of many garden clubs and sought after as a speaker. She had a passion for iris and was a "backyard hybridizer" who won many awards. She was an artist, writer, and quiltmaker.
Joanne F. Albrecht 1931-2016 Joanne retired from the Shoreline School District. She and her husband had four children. After retirement they spent time at their vacation properties in Lake Cavanaugh and Desert Hot Springs. A celebration of life was held at Acacia in Lake Forest Park.
Maria J. Shaffer 1935-2016 Born in Poland, raised in the UK, came to the US in 1964 and worked as a physical therapist. Raised her daughter in Lake Forest Park. She loved music and dance and treasured her Polish heritage. Services at St. Marks in Shoreline.
