WeatherWatcher: Excessive Heat Warning, Red Flag Warning

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued several hazardous weather alerts that span over the next couple of days. Shoreline and Lake Forest Park are actually at the northern end of this nasty heat wave, so we may not be quite as hot as Seattle proper and south. These warnings are for King County which includes Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

Excessive Heat Warning is in effect from Thursday August 18, 2:00pm until Saturday August 20, 9:00pm. Temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid 90's for a high temperature, peaking in the 4:30pm - 6:00pm time range. For Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, expect tomorrows high temperature in the 5:00pm range to reach around 92-94°F. Saturday is likely to see about 93-95°F at about the same time. The tricky part is low temperatures will not get much cooler than around 65°F overnight Thursday-Friday and again Friday-Saturday.

Red Flag Warning is in effect until Saturday August 20, 11:59pm. The warning is due to a combination of low relative humidity, and breezy conditions. The Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are occurring and can contribute to active fire behavior. Typically this condition is what causes small fires to blow up out of control, particularly brush fires and forest fires in the area.

Our heat wave will end on Sunday with cooler temperatures and marine air returning. Sunny skies to continue through early next week with high temperatures back down to the low 80's.
