Local Resident Graduates from Macalester College with honors

Laura Elizabeth Humes, the daughter of Lisa and Todd Humes of Shoreline, graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota during the college’s Commencement exercises on May 14.
Humes, a graduate of Shorewood High School, received a liberal arts degree in Environmental Studies.
In addition, Humes received the following honors/awards:
- Honors Project: Constituting and Contesting Development in Bolivia, Vietnam, and Turkey. Environmental Studies: Roopali Phadke, Advisor
- PHI BETA KAPPA: Election to Phi Beta Kappa recognizes outstanding scholarship in the liberal arts and sciences. Election is usually limited to the top 12% of the senior class. All candidates must have demonstrated a knowledge of mathematics and of a foreign language at least minimally appropriate for a liberal education.
- MAGNA CUM LAUDE: an academic level of distinction used by educational institutions to signify an academic degree that was received "with great honor.
Macalester College, founded in 1874, is a national liberal arts college with a full-time enrollment of 2,138 students. Macalester is nationally recognized for its long-standing commitment to academic excellence, internationalism, multiculturalism, and civic engagement.
