ARTIST STATEMENT:
When I first came across Sumi-e painting, I was intrigued by the spontaneity and expressionistic nature of the media. My teacher always says "The goal is to capture the essence of your subject with as few strokes as possible". This was both freeing and challenging for a detail oriented person like me. Given the unforgiving nature of rice paper, brush strokes often have to flow quickly and be swift. This always makes me feel like I am dancing on paper with my brushes. I still feel like I am dancing with two left feet sometimes. But once in a while I let go of daily stresses, get in tune with the music, and beautiful things happens.."

BIO:
I recently discovered the use of resin in my turnings and I'm exploring various ways of incorporating it. So far, that means branch segment accent bands on salad bowls, and decorative bowls with branch segments bathed in resin and little bowls and cups with resin streaks.

I use local woods, such as Alder, Cherry, Holly and Big Leaf Maple but every now and then something semi-exotic falls my way and I try it for accent. I season the wood I use for these bowls for several years in order to stabilize them before I apply resin or branch segments. The interiors of larger salad bowls are treated with walnut oil so they can be used, well, for salads. The exteriors, and interiors, of many of my bowls are coated with a clear hard resin that has been polished.
I've been turning for 30 years and I am finding the use of these materials exciting because they allow the turning to 'emerge' along another dimension.
