Einstein wrestling scores huge victory - first team to defeat Evergreen in 14 years

The Einstein boys in blue faced off against Evergreen Middle School of Everett on Thursday. The Evergreen Timberwolves not only edged out the Einstein Tigers for a league title last season but they were also riding a 14-year winning streak in dual meets.

The two teams traded pins during the first five matches and Einstein found itself trailing 12-18. At 108 pounds, Tiger Kody Carpenter used a perfectly executed suicide cradle to pin his opponent in the first round and tie the team score.

In the next match, 113 pound wrestler Curt Tanaka continued his perfect season by taking his opponent straight from his feet to his back. The pin by Tanaka gave Einstein its first lead of the afternoon, 24-18.

The Timberwolves would tie the score again with a pin of their own at 118 pounds before undefeated Einstein wrestler Devin Leach took the mat. Leach improved to 5-0, all by pins, on the year and kept his unblemished middle school career intact with a 37 second pin.

Leach's pin, as well as pins by fellow undefeated Tigers Ryan Araujo at 128 pounds and Austin Newman at 133 pounds, gave Einstein a 42-24 cushion.

When 7th grader Taejin Thongdee picked up his third pin in his last three matches at 178 pounds it capped a 52-12 run and gave the Tigers an insurmountable 64-30 lead.

The final score of 64-54 made Einstein the first team to defeat Evergreen in 14 years and is the first time Coach Derek Norton has ever defeated them.  

Einstein wrestles next on Tuesday, March 15th, at home against Meadowdale Middle School. Wrestling begins at 3:45pm.
