Business Workshops for Artists & Crafters

Artists and Crafters Unite! Time to roll up your sleeves, put on your business hats, and get down and dirty with the numbers and paperwork side of being an artist.

This fall the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council will be hosting a series of Art / Business Workshops designed to help you put your best foot forward. You’ve already done the hard work of pouring your talents and skills into your art, now let us help you take that next step and polish your professional side.

Workshops are $15 each, with the exception of Hidden Hazards in the Arts, which is being presented for free. Tickets available online at Brown Paper Tickets (links with each workshop). 

Hidden Hazards in the Arts – August 18, Free

6:30pm – Shoreline City Hall, Room 301

Artists can learn about safer chemicals, storage and disposal at a free Hidden Hazards in the Arts workshop sponsored by the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County (LHWMP), and the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council. Participants will learn helpful tips on how they can protect themselves from the many toxic chemicals typically used in a variety of artistic mediums.

Donna Galstad, a Health and Environmental Investigator with the LHWMP Art Hazards team, will discuss art techniques, options for less-toxic art supplies and ways to reduce risks from chemicals, as well as other services.

Professional Practices in the Arts – September 1 

6:30pm – Shoreline City Hall, Room 301

Polish your professional side! This workshop will go over various artwork pricing methods, proper artwork presentation and framing, knowing your market, and self-promotion tools. Presented by Lorie Hoffman and Tara Shadduck of the Arts Council, topics covered will also include how to approach galleries, knowing when to pay for a show and when not, and where you can find more resources to continue to polish your professional side.

Intellectual Property – September 15 

6:30pm – Shoreline City Hall, Room 301 

Whether you’re an artist, or attorney serving clients in creative professions, you will leave this 90-minute workshop with a better understanding of how to protect creative work. Key points will include 1) the law as it relates to your work, 2) the differences between copyrights, trademarks and patents, 3) copyright and trademark registration, including the benefits of registration and the costs, and, 4) who owns the copyright in a work created by more than one person and in works created in the course of employment. Bring your questions – this is an excellent introductory seminar for all artists, and for attorneys whose clients include artists.

This workshop is presented by the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council in partnership with Washington Lawyers for the Arts. 

Writing an Artist Statement and Bio – September 29 

6:30pm – Shoreline City Hall, Room 301

The Artist Statement is a powerful tool, along with titles it’s one of the only ways artists have to give context to their artwork and guide the viewer on how to see your pieces. You work hard to make your art, make sure your Artist Statement is helping you convey that process and supports your vision. Participants should bring what they currently have for statements and bios and be prepared to actively work on their statements during the workshop.
