Tuesday, June 2, 2015

The Shorecrest boys' soccer team placed third in the state 2A tournament after a 2-0 victory over Othello in the consolation game Saturday in Sumner.

Shorecrest had dropped into the third-place game with a 2-1 loss to Northwest District rival Archbishop Murphy Friday in Sumner.

Murphy went on to take the championship with a 3-0 victory over Fife Saturday.

Shorecrest's semifinal loss to Archbishop Murphy came 17 days after the Scots lost to ATM, 2-0, in the Nortwest District 2A semifinals. That loss forced the Scots to win two district losers-bracket games to qualify for state play, while Murphy qualified despite a loss to Sedro Woolley in the district championship game.

The Scots won two state playoff victories before the state semifinal loss to Archbishop Murphy Friday and the Saturday victory over Othello that left Shorecrest with a 20-3-1 record.

In the Saturday victory over Othello, Anton Resing scored two second-half goals for the Scots, one unassisted, one with an assist from Leon Bormann. Goalkeeper Matt Wheaton recorded the shutout.

In the state semifinal loss to Archbishop Murphy Friday. Shorecrest's Kevin Musar scored the first goal of the game, but the Wildcats shut the Scots down the rest of the game while scoring two goals of their own.

Shorecrest had reached the state semifinals with a 3-0 victory over North Kitsap May 20, and a 2-1 win over Kingston May 23.

In the Northwest District 2A tournament May 9-16, Shorecrest defeated Anacortes 3-0 before losing to Archbishop Murphy. In the losers bracket, the Scots topped Squalicum, 2-1, before defeating Anacortes, 2-1, in game for the district's third and fourth spots in state 2A play.

Both district champuon Sedro Wolley and fourth-place Anacortes lost their only games in the state playoffs.

Shorecrest had won the Wesco 3A/2A championship with an 11-1 record. The Shorecrest junior varsity had a 7-4-1 Wesco 3A record (9-4-2 overall) to place fourth in the division.
