Friday’s Job Seekers’ Round Table June 5: Assessing Transferable Skills
Transferable skills are those you have acquired during any activity in your life -- jobs, classes, projects, parenting, hobbies, sports, virtually anything -- that are transferable and applicable to what you want to do in your next job.
For example, almost every resumé includes the bulleted item “strong communication skills.” But what exactly does that mean? Forms and styles of written communication? Great storyteller? Conveying a positive and likable self-image?
We often fall into the trap of describing ourselves as a job title, rather than who we really are, and what inspires or motivates us. The fact is, the skills we’ve learned from a lifetime of “you do this, I give you a check,” are just a tiny fraction of everything that makes each one of us unique.
Let’s talk about how we might assign our skills to a broader variety of jobs and careers.
As per the usual: Strong coffee, sweet treats, all compliments of Central Market.
