Kruckeberg Botanic Garden to host Mother’s Day Plant Sale May 8-10

The Kruckeberg Botanic garden is preparing its annual Mother’s Day Sale as spring weather promises another good year in the garden.

The Kruckeberg Botanic Garden cultivates more than 500 rare and Pacific Northwest native plant species on site and will have their largest selection available for this special sale weekend. The Garden’s Foundation continues the legacy of the Kruckeberg’s life work cultivating rare and exotic plants from around the world, many of which are only available during this weekend. 

Nursery Manager Roseann Beaudry is preparing for a busy weekend and knows visitors will be coming from across the Northwest to visit the garden in Shoreline. 

“The Mother’s Day sale is a great opportunity for plant collectors to find rare plants for their gardens, and to see the garden in full spring bloom,” she said.

The Kruckebergs began their annual plant sale in the mid 1970s as an open house for visitors to tour the garden. Their family spent annual vacations collecting seeds across the world and bringing home new plants for their four acre space, which is now home to more than 2500 different plant varieties. 

In 2007, the City of Shoreline purchased the site and incorporated it into the city parks system where it is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the year. 

“We have a very unique garden,” Brianne Zorn the Foundation’s Executive Director noted.  “There are very few gardens with this kind of history, plant variety, and educational materials that are open and free to the general public. Our organization works in the spirit of Dr. K and Mareen Kruckeberg who led the horticultural community here in the Northwest for decades. We are excited to be building on our youth programs, improving our adult-oriented activities and continuing education opportunities to serve the life-learners in horticulture.”

The garden offers school field trips and activities for all ages, gardening workshops, and a self-guided phone tour in addition to the MsK Nursery.      

Parking is limited at the garden site, and a free shuttle will bring visitors from the Richmond Beach Congregational Church on Friday and Saturday (1512 NW 195th St) or Syre Elementary School on Sunday (19545 12th Ave NW).  The garden will be open 10AM-5PM each day. Shuttle service on Saturday will also include stops to the Strawberry Festival and Classic Car Show in the Richmond Beach neighborhood.
