Sky gardening: eat what you grow presentations this weekend

Thursday, March 5, 2015

Sky presents two seminars this weekend, both aimed at helping local gardeners grow edibles in their home gardens.

Saturday, March 14th, 11 am – 1 pm  Edible Garden Design
Brad Halm of The Seattle Urban Farm Company

Want to grow food in your yard this season? Let Brad Halm of Seattle Urban Farm Company guide you through designing your own "backyard farm". He’ll discuss how to find the best spot on your property for a vegetable garden, how to lay out the space for maximum production and ease of use, and how to get your soil into condition to grow top quality organic vegetables. He'll also teach you how to incorporate fruit trees and berry bushes into your existing landscape. For those of you with more urban yards, he'll cover growing edibles in container gardens.

Sunday, March 15th 1 pm – 2:30 pm
Plan and Plant Your Vegetable Garden Emily Wilkins

Lusciously tender salad greens, crisp carrots, succulent snow peas… now is the time to plant your cool-season crops for spring harvest, and to plan for your tomatoes, beans, and other summer bounty!  Commercial agriculture has to breed for vegetables that are tough enough to transport and store well –the homeowner can pick tender and tasty varieties bred to be harvested right before dinner! Emily will point you to the most problem-free, productive, and flavorful varieties for our climate, and go over the basics of planting, fertilizing, watering, and (most importantly!) harvesting your fresh vegetables.
