The Aurora Safeway store closed at 6pm on Wednesday, February 25th. Haggen took ownership right after midnight and began the store conversation.
The new Haggen store opened at 9am on Saturday, February 28, the first Safeway to be converted in the 26 store acquisition in Washington state.
During the three day closure:
- Exterior and interior signage was replaced.
- The store received a coat of fresh paint and Haggen murals on the walls.
- Haggen expanded the produce section.
- Haggen private label product was added to the shelves.

John Clougher, CEO Haggen Pacific NW, noted the store offering has also changed. “Haggen has built its 81-year-old business on providing excellent, locally sourced, fresh produce and high quality meats and seafood. That focus will definitely be reflected in the new stores.”

Don Williams, who has been the store manager for three years, reports that 100% of the staff have made the transition to Haggen's. Their union contract was picked up in total by Haggen’s and no one lost any of their accrued leave time with the change nor got a cut in pay.

The store hours have not changed so the transition for customers has been easy.
Williams said they have been receiving positive comments about having Haggen’s back in Shoreline.

I was there at lunch time on Monday March 2nd (12:30pm) and there were a surprising amount of people at the store. There were not enough registers operating, however, and lines were long. Having several managerial types hanging out in the front of the store while this was happening was a bit insulting. They should have been helping get the lines down. I will wait a bit before going back.
The employees at Lake Forest Park (soon to be former) Albertsons have expressed how they are looking forward to the change. It helped that their contracts were rolled over to Haggens and the holding company.
It's nice to see Haggen back in town. It's not nice to see their empty stores on 175th and 220th in Edmonds.
