Arts Council Community Spotlight: Ken Noreen, Art Advocate
Tuesday, December 2, 2014
In
Celebration of 25 years of doing good in our community, the Arts
Council would like to take some time and highlight some of our fantastic
members who are doing great things in our community.
Ken Noreen - Shoreline
Arts Council Founding Board Member
Director of Shoreline Concert Band
What do you love most about our community?
I’m
so glad to have raised our children in this community because it’s a
place that values the right things; it values what you can succeed in
with your individual talents and for a lot of people in this community,
that’s the arts.
How do the arts make an impact in your life?
There’s
an appreciation as you age for more artistic things. I mean, why do we
have the painting in our house that we do? We’re so proud that every
place we go we try to bring a painting that means something to my wife
and I and that’s just a part of our life, an appreciation of aesthetic
things. I really am a sports fan and I love winning, we attend a lot of
sporting events, but no way would I give up going to the symphony or the
rep in place of that. It’s a life style, something in your heart that
you grow with over a period of time. It’s an appreciation for things
other than winning or losing.
Why should someone support the Arts Council?
It’s
important to support our own local arts organization because this money
goes back into our local groups like Shoreline Concert Band or the
schools. It’s a reflection of our community, I wouldn’t have ever wanted
to raise or family in another community, and that’s why we support the
Arts Council.
Join Ken and become a member of the Arts Council. You’ll not only receive some great member perks, you’ll also
get to bask in the warm glow that comes with knowing you’ve helped
foster creativity in your community. Stand with your neighbors who
together have invested over $3 million in arts and arts education
right here in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park over the last 25 years.

Art is a wonderful thing. It should be supported by private endowments. But, speaking for Shoreline, before you pass the hat, you should disclose that a significant amount of support for the arts in Shoreline is paid for by the taxpayers. By annual contract, the City is the "primary sponsor" of the following Arts Council programs, to the tune of $60,000 a year.
Shoreline Arts Festival
Concerts/Performances in the Parks
Arts & Culture Events
Family Performances
Community Outreach
Arts Education
Portable Works
In addition to being the primary financial sponsor of those services, the City Parks Department provides arts and special events services inhouse, such as Celebrate Shoreline, Summer Lunchtime Music Series, Swingin' Summer Eve, Hamlin Haunt, and Healthy City.
The taxpayers support the arts already, by government coercion. Have the Shoreline City Council return arts funding authority to individual citizens, and those of use so inclined will gladly fund the arts ourselves, voluntarily.
On Monday, January 5, 2015, the Shoreline City Council will approve a new contract: Motion to Authorize the City Manager to Execute a Contract with the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Arts Council.
And I for one would like to see the Shoreline Arts Festival retired. If you've attended once, there is no need to go again. Nothing new or original from year to year. Let the local groups have a day-long performance of their traditional folk dances and advertise it as such.
