Hillwood Creek perseveres Photo by Boni Biery |
Hillwood Community Network will be planting the first segment of a multi-year stream buffer enhancement along the creek running through Hillwood Park. It will take three planting days this year and they can use your help.
The goal is to establish a wetland meadow that attracts/ supports native birds for the entire length of the creek over time.
The creek, officially known as Boeing Creek Reach 12 drains into Pan
Terra, then Boeing Creek and the Puget Sound. The original creek was filled in years ago when the park was created, damaging the creek and destroying the wetlands around it.
The outlines of the creek can still be seen. The ground no longer has an opportunity to soak up the
water and it rushes into Boeing Creek. adding to all the water that
scours out the walls of the Boeing Creek during storm events.
The goal of the restoration project is to recreate a beautiful and functional wetland meadow that will naturally "manage" the water and reduce the flashy scouring of Boeing Creek while at the same time making a place for native birds to perch, nest and feed.
Let organizers know which day(s) you will be able to help by emailing birdsbeesfishtrees @ gmail.com with “Hillwood Creek” in the subject line.
Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own gloves and hand digging tools; and dress for the weather. Community Service credit is available.
