Seattle Times endorses Chris Eggen for 32nd District state Senate seat
Wednesday, July 16, 2014
Our news partner The Seattle Times, has endorsed Shoreline City Councilman and Deputy Mayor Chris Eggen for the 32nd District State Senate seat, saying that Eggen offers the Legislature valuable local government perspectives on state-wide issues
In a Tuesday editorial, the Times said this:
“Chase is a long-serving member of the Legislature with a reputation for strong party loyalties and a feisty style. Eggen argues there is precious little legislation adopted with her sponsorship.
“Eggen knows what is ahead, especially with education. He is open to new revenue options to fund the education financing gap at the heart of the state Supreme Court’s McCleary ruling.
“He understands local municipal management, utility issues and transportation topics. Puget Sound cities need strong representation in Olympia.
“Eggen is an experienced option for Democratic voters in District 32. A third candidate in the race, Republican Robert Reedy offers no evidence he is qualified.”
Voters in Shoreline, northwest Seattle, Lynnwood, Woodway and nearby unincorporated areas of southwest Snohomish County, and parts of Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace will choose among the three in the August primary, with the top two vote getters advancing to the November ballot.
All three will meet in a candidate forum on Thursday evening, July 17, 7pm at Richmond Beach Congregational Church, at the corner of NW Richmond Beach Road and 15th Avenue NW (1512 NW 195th St) in Shoreline.

Chris Eggen could not even round up the four votes necessary from the Shoreline City Council to become Mayor, that is why he is still the Deputy.
And Chris has a pathetic list of endorsers and has only raised about $7k compared to Sen Chase $35k. He could only must 7 votes at the 32nd Democrats Endorsement meeting for a dual endorsement. He could not even get a second for his PCO race endorsement!
When he tried to get the 32nd Endorsement, he had to read a statement. He cannot even speak to a crowd of 3 people effectively.
He argues that Sen Chase has not done enough for education? Then why have the WEA AND the AFT endorsed her. Chris has ZERO experience with education funding! ZERO. Maralyn has managed to get millions for not only the Shoreline School District but also fend off Charter schools until the big money people finally succeeded in their initiative after 4 tries.
Maralyn Chase is a Champion with seniority and now sits on the Powerful Trade and Economic Development Committee. She is a small business owner and knows the manufacturing issues. Which is why she has support from that sector. And she has enormous support from Labor, environment and womens and gay rights groups!
Why on earth would this district want to throw out someone with so much experience and ability for someone who just wants a pension? Why?
Curious voters want to know Seattle Times? Why is this paper in the heart of Seattle so determined to get rid of a progressive champion like Maralyn Chase?
I've noticed that the Seattle Times editorial board is against labor, education, affordable housing — in short, the middle class and those struggling to make it into the middle class. They seem to like being in the 1% and look down on all those who aren't in the 1% or support the 1%.
So it's no surprise that they endorsed Chris Eggen.

Senator Chase is definitely the better Democrat candidate, she goes out of her way to advocate for an income tax, something Chris calls "new revenue". I saw her presentation and it was very slick. Of course it totally left out the part where the poor have to deal with a whole new set of revenue bureaucrats, and they don't want to, and how much it would hurt business to do all the added paper work.... But they keep trying.
For jobs vote for the other party.
Chris Eggen claims to understand transportation, utilities, education, and a women's right to choose, but does not have the endorsement of any of the groups that advocate or are affected by policies implemented by the legislature. However, Maralyn Chase does have their endorsement.
Chris Eggen claims Maralyn Chase is an ineffective legislator, but he is so spineless on the Shoreline City Council that they changed Council Rules to start recording votes for abstentions since he did so frequently. Hey Chris, have some courage and cast a yea or a nay vote sometime! Just because you abstain doesn't mean you placated everyone, it just means you disappointed everyone.
And Chris hasn't raised $7,000, he loaned his campaign $5,000, he only raised $2,000 and has whined about it. I would like to know how he has paid for his website, mailings and door bell pieces that have been professionally produced on only $5,000 since he has not reported it to the PDC yet.
Senator Maralyn Chase has provided outstanding leadership on people's issues during all her legislative years, starting in the House and currently in the Senate. She has a superb record and dedication to the best interests of the people, and deserves re-election.
Maralyn Chase’s courage in pursuing progressive change has been responsible for improving life for the average person in many areas – education, economy, environment, to name only three that immediately and significantly impact our lives.
Maralyn Chase has never been a “go along to get along” legislator, yet has been willing to make the sort of compromise that will achieve at least part of what the people need while she continues to push for the larger goal until she succeeds in the long term.
Maralyn Chase has her eye not only on the here-and-now needs of her constituents and the state, but also on long-term challenges that require current attention. We are lucky to have her broad experience, foresight, persistence and persuasiveness working in the people’s behalf.
It may be needless to say, but I must add that the Seattle Times has shown its editorial point of view to be skewed much to the right of center on many issues – even to the point of directly participating in the gubernatorial race of 2012 by giving a substantial amount of free advertising to the unsuccessful campaign of anti-choice Republican Rob McKenna in his race against his opponent, now Governor Jay Inslee.
Anyone who judges legislative success by the number of bills that bear someone's name displays profound ignorance of how things work in Olympia or any other legislative body. Legislative success is not like academic success, to be judged by the number of one's publications. By bringing issues up for discussion that others are reluctant to because they are not yet popular is the sign of a pro-active mind, broad vision and devotion to the public interest.
No one else running for the 32nd LD senate seat can bring to our legislature the high level of performance provided by our incumbent, State Senator Maralyn Chase.
The Seattle Times endorsements are great for me - I always know who to vote against!
The previous comments are why I expect that Maralyn will win re-election. She's a savvy politician who is a lightening rod for a relatively small group of activists in the Democratic party. Let's be realistic, though, she couldn't muster up a majority of votes on the present Shoreline City Council, either (comment 1). The Seattle Times is merely mentioning Eggen as an alternative in a three-person race where the "top two" go forward. That isn't the same as endorsing him for the seat in the general election (comments 2, 3, 7).
I was shocked to see Eggen even file, he already has a pension, and being a long-time member of the same 32nd District Democrats as Maralyn, he knows what he's up against. And, for while he seems a capable seat-warmer (I agree with comment 6), he would never be labeled as "feisty," which the Times has accurately portrayed Maralyn as. Comment 2 offers two of the best reasons for her, seniority and position. Comment 4 offers the weakest, a list of special interest groups, which her position attracts due to it being a state legislator, puts their group interests - important to some voters - at the head of the line, her daughter's loyalty (in commenting) is more important. The next one offers a better reason for Maralyn, that she'll stand up and not be nebulous about where she stands, which I can attest to. Long-time supporter Elaine (previous comment) has pointed out some excellent reasons in general terms, though I'd have liked to have seen specific areas where she's compromised, particularly with the entrenched "Majority Coalition" or even with Eastern Washington legislators, at that doesn't seem like her. My hope is that the focus will be more than half on specific areas where the candidate has excelled and learned from.
If you bring up the name "Maralyn Chase" to any actual legislator, you get an eye roll.
It's widely acknowledged in Olympia she is ineffective, which is why she's been sidelined. If you listen to her speak, it's clear why that's the case.
Chris Eggen may not be that great, but he's better than nothing, which Sen. Chase largely is.
Any actual legislator - hey I know a few and they don't roll their eyes when I bring up Maralyn Chase. But I do roll my eyes when I read comments like yours.
What kills me is that Chris Eggen, who was introduced to Shoreline politics by Maggie Fimia, now has run into the wide open arms of Maggie Fimia's enemies -- ain't politics and self-serving egos grand? Shh, when Chris thinks Pro Shoreline isn't paying attention he invokes Maggie Fimia as one of his champions.
The 32nd Democratic LD has a Civility Pledge that it asks candidates to sign. Maralyn Chase signed it, Chris Eggen did not. I wonder - which part of it does he not want to promise to follow? Here's the pledge.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The 32nd Legislative District Democratic Organization Civility Pledge
As a candidate for elective office, I pledge to uphold the following principles in my campaign.
1. I will respect and listen to those who bring different points of view to the public arena, including those with whom I disagree.
2. I will insist that my campaign message, literature, slogans, radio and TV ads, paid staff, and volunteers respect the dignity of all people – no matter what their background may be. I will demand corrective action if violations do occur.
3. I will represent myself and my beliefs in an honest and forthright manner, and I will be clear with voters about the programs and policies that I plan to promote if elected. I will not use deceptive campaign tactics.
4. I will challenge any attempts to stifle public debate and I will protect everyone’s right to express their beliefs and views without the threat of harassment, intimidation, or violence.
5. I will honor the spirit as well as the letter of all campaign finance laws and honestly report, as fully as possible, all expenditures made on my behalf.
