County transportation package headed for clear defeat

The King County roads and transportation package on the Tuesday ballot appeared to be headed for a clear defeat in returns released Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon.

Tuesday night returns showed Proposition 1 failing by a 55.28 percent to 44.72 percent margin.

Wednesday afternoon returns, including all ballots from drop boxes and vans, showed the proposal getting marginally closer but still losing by a 54.51 percent to 45.49 percent margin.

With votes counted from 35.09 percent of registered King County voters, thousands of uncounted ballots and more ballots yet to arrive, the election seemed poised to reach the 38 percent turnout that County elections officials had planned for.

King County plans to release updated returns Thursday afternoon and each weekday afternoon until final certification of results in about two weeks.

Will King County get religion, now that the voters have delivered the clearest of messages? Not a chance. Dow Constantine and Rod Dembowski won their elections last November. This is only a setback for them, not a wakeup call, unfortunately.
