The Shorewood girls’ soccer team lost a Northwest District 3A tournament semifinal game Tuesday at Shoreline Stadium to drop to an elimination game Thursday against Mountlake Terrace at Edmonds Stadium.
Western Conference 3A South fourth-place Shorewood takes a 10-6-2 record into a 5 p.m. Thursday match with Wesco 3A South third-place Mountlake Terrace (11-6-1).
The winner of Shorewood’s Thursday match with Mountlake Terrace plays against the winner of a Tuesday game between Marysville Getchell and Marysville-Pilchuck in a Saturday 5 p.m. match at Shoreline Stadium for the District’s No. 3 State berth.
Shorewood dropped to the consolation round with a 2-0 loss to Wesco 3A South runner-up Meadowdale Tuesday. Meadowdale advances to the District championship game against Wesco 3A South champion Shorecrest Saturday at 7 p.m. at Shoreline Stadium.
Shorewood reached the semifinals with a 4-3 shootout victory over North division champion Marysville-Pilchuck at Marysville-Pilchuck.
In Meadowdale’s victory over Shorewood in the semifinal game at Shoreline Stadium, the night was damp with no wind. The excitement of the previous overtime game was still in the air. Both teams passed and moved the ball well and had a couple of chances in the first half but were not able to score. The second half started with Shorewood hitting the crossbar on a shot by Carrie Jensen in the first minute. Meadowdale started working the right side of the field and finally got a goal in the 56th minute on a header. Two minutes later, Meadowdale scored its second goal. Shorewood tried to press harder to score but was unable to find the net and the game ended 2-0. Ariel Garay was in goal for Shorewood.
Shorewood coach Bill Wilkins said that the game with Marysville-Pilchuck Saturday, Oct. 2, matched the turbulent windy day. Shorewood opened the scoring at the twelfth minute when Zoe Vincini passed the ball to Salyna McDonald who in turn hit it to Christine Donnan. Pilchuck scored about a minute later to tie the score 1-1. In the 42nd minute Siena Helland scored on a pass from Vincini to put Shorewood up 2-1. Ten minutes later Pilchuck tied the game at 2-2. In the 58th minute Vincini scored on a pass from Carrie Jensen before Pilchuck tied the game for the third time. With no scores in overtime the game went to penalty kicks. Shorewood led off and made each kick in the first five. Pilchuck answered with five of its own. Sudden death penalty kicks followed. Shorewood scored as did MP. On the seventh kick, Shorewood scored, and then goalkeeper Ariel Garay was able to save the next shot for the win.
