Letter to the Editor: Ronald Wastewater Board should practice what they preach

Sunday, October 20, 2013

To the Editor:

This letter contains my personal comment on two recent actions by the Ronald Wastewater District (RWD) Sewer Utility Board. First is RWD’s accusation that the City of Shoreline wants to assume RWD to take their reserve and use it for general government purposes. This is ludicrous because such an action would be illegal and because if the city assumed the sewer district the full financial reserve would still be necessary.

Second, at the most recent meeting the RWD Board attempted to censure a board member for expressing dissenting views regarding assumption. The RWD board has made a big deal of saying they want everyone to be able to express their opinion on assumption. Perhaps they should practice what they preach.

Perhaps Deputy Mayor Chris Eggen should be aware of the fact that given the litigation that is ongoing between Ronald Wastewater and the City of Shoreline that the Board took action because of such litigation and he should also be cognizant of his position as an official of the City of Shoreline in such litigation. Maybe the public should be aware that in the counter-claim filed against Ronald Wastewater the City sought to quash any communication between Ronald Wastewater and their ratepayers.

Additionally, Deputy Mayor Chris Eggen appeared before the Shoreline Fire District in July 2012 and stated that all special purpose districts are inefficient and wasteful, once again he stated he was speaking purely as a citizen and then went on to present all of the city's talking points as did Councilmember McConnell. However, he was upset when a citizen pointed out to the fire commissioners that Shoreline Fire was a special purpose district as was the Shoreline Public School District and that Deputy Mayor Eggen has just stated that Shoreline Fire was inefficient and wasteful, not to mention that if the city indeed was serious about becoming a full service city they must intend to take over Shoreline Fire and Shoreline Schools in the future. Well, do they? You can't believe a single thing that comes from the city these days.

The city has run around carping about two extra commissioners and they are about to give seven city councilmembers a huge raise even though they continue to add to the city's debt. The city just raided the surface water utility fund to purchase the Brugger's Bog storage yard and are now talking about spending $5 million for a police department garage. If the city is serious about becoming a full service city, when are they going to quit contracting with King County for police services and create their own police department since we are going to spend $5 million for a new garage?

The City makes such a big deal about nickels and dimes over at RWW and they go out spend hundreds of dollars in comparison.

Chris Eggen states on one hand he supports an election and then goes and votes for litigation against RWW to fight any election for a takeover by the City of RWW, in other words, he talks out of both sides of his mouth.

Doesn't the city council march in lock step with each other? The last few city councilmembers who didn't go along with the majority were called divisive by the city staff, other councilmembers and Chris Eggen's supporters and drummed out of office.
