BECU awards grants to three Shoreline Schools

BECU announced last week Echo Lake Elementary, Meridian Park, and Parkwood Elementary are three of the 49 Washington schools awarded grants totaling more than $100,000 statewide. The funding for recipients will go towards a variety of school programs, from green school certification, to outdoor education and technology for literacy and math.

BECU received approximately 84 applications and narrowed it down to 49 based on eligibility of the request, impact on student learning, number of students reached with grant funds, and potential on-going use of the item or program. Grants are awarded in three categories: Financial Literacy, Environmental Sustainability, and Technology Tools.

This year marks the 11th year that BECU has awarded over $100,000 in community grants to support education projects that help promote student excellence.

Echo Lake Elementary – This grant will be used to purchase six iPad minis to provide tools for remediation and extension of learning in language arts, math, and the physical and social sciences.

Meridian Park Elementary – This grant will help fund science field trips/outdoor educational lessons focused specifically on environmental sustainability issues that will enhance students’ awareness of the natural world around them.

Parkwood Elementary - Parkwood will use this grant to hire an environmental educator to supplement the science curriculum by bringing science and sustainability lessons to life in class, followed by field trips inspiring students to look closer, learn more and be better stewards.
