Shorecrest girls finish basketball season with loss at Stanwood

The Shorecrest girls’ basketball season ended Tuesday when the Scots lost a Northwest District 3A tournament consolation-round game at Western Conference 3A North champion Stanwood.

The 47-39 loss to Stanwood finished Shorecrest’s season with a 12-11 record after an 11-9 regular-season record (8-5 Wesco 3A). The Scots had opened tournament play, Feb. 5 with a 54-35 loss to Northwest 3A/2A/1A champion Ferndale, followed by a 62-54 victory over Marysville-Pilchuck Feb. 8 before the loss to Stanwood. 

Stanwood will meet Shorewood Friday for the District’s No. 3 berth in the State 3A tournament, with Everett and Glacier Peak playing in the District championship game.

In Shorecrest’s loss to Stanwood, the Scots led 13-5 after the first quarter before falling behind 18-16 at halftime and 32-17 after three quarters, and couldn’t close the gap in the final period. Annie Schlachter led Shorecrest with 15 points, followed by Uju Chibuogwu with 10 and Onyie Chibuogwu with 6.

For the season, Onyie Chibuogwu led the Scots with 249 points in 22 games for an average of 11.3 points per game, followed by Schlachter with 214 points in 23 games for an average of 9.3. 

The Shorecrest junior varsity had a 12-8 record (8-5 Wesco 3A).
