SCC Basketball teams finish pre-region play this weekend in crossover tournaments

By Doug Palmer

The Shoreline Community College Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams complete their pre-region games this weekend in two different NWAACC Crossover Tournaments. The SCC Women’s Team, off to a 4-2 start for the year are at Pasco, WA in the Columbia Basin College NWAACC Crossover Tournament and face Southwestern Oregon Community College on Friday night at 8:00 pm. The SCC men’s team is even farther East, as they play in the NWAACC Crossover at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, OR. The Dolphins are a disappointing 1-6 so far this season after finishing last year 19-13.

For the Lady Dolphins, the team started 4-0 before losing their last two games and have found difficulty scoring since their opening game win against Northwest Indian College, 100 to 47. SCC is only shooting 33% for the season and are hitting just 26% of their three point attempts. The team has a balanced attack with 9 players scoring between 5 and 9 points, but no one for SCC is scoring in double figures after 6 games. Sophomore Catlin Roussopolos and freshman Chelsea Padgett lead SCC in scoring with 8.67 averages per game. Hannah Stanger has been a solid rebounder for SCC, averaging 8 a game.

The team defeated Northwest Indian College to open the year, and then defeated Portland Community College twice and South Puget Sound Community College before they ran into Douglas College in Vancouver, BC and dropped their first game of the year, 58-41 and being outscored in the second half, 42-28. SCC then dropped a 74-62 game to TEAM NPIRE, an Australian club team.

On the men’s side of the ledger, the Dolphins are averaging 100.00 points a game in their fast paced, full court style of offense and defense, but have allowed two 130+ point games to opponents and are having their own shooting woes, as the male version of the Dolphins only shoot 34% from the field themselves and 27% from the three point arch. And SCC has been hindered by having several players benched for the pre-region schedule due grades but hopefully will have 3-4 players back eligible after fall grades are posted so they can play in the region schedule that starts on January 5.

SCC is lead by Nahshon George, a sophomore from Honolulu, HI who is averaging 19 points a game with 15 rebounds. George, a 6’8” post player, has already garnered several looks from four year colleges. He leads in the NWAACC in rebounds and is in the top 20 in scoring. Freshman guard, Steven Del Veccio, is second in scoring, averaging 15 points a game.

Shoreline faces Big Bend Community College in the opening round of their crossover at Noon on Friday.

Both teams open up region play on January 5 at Everett Community College. The Lady Dolphins do have one more game before taking Christmas break, as they play Douglas College on December 18th in the SCC Gym at 7:00pm.
