On an evening when the wind was the biggest overriding factor in the game, the Shorecrest Scots girls' soccer team used it best to their advantage in defeating Stanwood 1-0 Saturday at Shoreline Stadium, to take third place in the District 1 3A playoffs.
The win advances the Scots to the 3A State Tournament that begins next week when they travel to Renton to play the Liberty Patriots. Date and time are to be announced.
Stanwood had the wind at their backs for the first half, but failed to capitalize on several chances. Shorecrest keeper Frida Swensen made several key saves to keep the Spartans off the board.
But when the teams changed sides after the break, the tide turned in the Scots' favor.
Just five minutes into the second half, Swensen's long free kick was corralled by senior Sophia Flohr, who dribbled in and beat the Spartans' goalie from close range for the game-winner.
For the remainder of the game Shorecrest controlled the action, aided by the wind which kept the Spartans from advancing the ball.
