Learn about Cohousing at workshop on September 26

Sunday, September 2, 2012

Schemata Workshop will present an informational session called “What is Cohousing” at Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Ave N, Shoreline, WA 98133, on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm.

Cohousing is an intentional neighborhood where residents know and care about each other.  While there is a high regard for privacy, residents actively build community through frequent shared meals, social events and work parties. People interested in cohousing typically value mentorship, sharing resources, and living lightly on the earth. The concept was imported from Denmark in the late 80’s and there are now over 120 built communities in the US.

This free informational session is open to those who are seeking an alternative way of living – independently owned housing that is also community oriented and cooperatively managed. This session will feature lots of photos of built communities around North America. Homeowners, renters, families and children are all welcome.

Schemata Workshop is an architectural collaborative in Seattle, started in 2004 by Grace Kim and Michael Mariano. In 2010, they received the Livable Communities Award from AARP and the National Association of Home Builders for the Daybreak Cohousing project in Portland, Oregon.  Grace is a registered architect in Washington and Oregon and served for four years on the board of the Cohousing Association of the United States. In 2008, Grace was awarded the AIA National Young Architects Award and in 2009 Schemata Workshop was awarded the City of Seattle Mayor’s Small Business Award.
