Thursday's 3A girls state basketball tournament roundup: Cleveland 39, Shorecrest 32

The inability to make free throws ultimately cost No. 8 Shorecrest on Friday in its 3A state girls quarterfinal game. The Highlanders made only 10 of 17 from the line, gave up a precarious halftime lead as the third quarter was ending and ultimately dropped a 39-32 decision to unranked Cleveland.
The Eagles (21-6) shot only 17.9 percent from the floor in the first half, making just five of 28 shots. Still, Shorecrest (20-5) led it just 17-13 at the half.
Cleveland then outscored the Highlanders 17-7 in the third quarter to take control. Shorecrest kept the game within reach, getting to within two on several occasions down the stretch, but never could get all the way back.
No Eagle scored in double digits. Makayla Roper scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds for the winners. Onyie Chibuogwu scored a game-high 13 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Highlanders.
Shorecrest takes a 20-4 record into an elimination game against Kamiakin of Kennewick Friday at 12:15 p.m. Kamiakin lost to Franklin of Seattle, 64-51, Thursday.
The winner of the Shorecrest-Kamiakin game plays for fourth place Saturday against the winner of a game between Lakeside of Seattle and Seattle Prep,

People new to Shorecrest's Onyie Chibuogwu often don't know how to pronounce her name. It's OWN-yee Chi-BAH-goo, she says.
In a regional game last weekend, Timberline did not know how to stop her. The 5-oot-9 sophomore scored 34 points and collected 14 rebounds.
The American-born daughter of Nigerian parents and younger sister of Shorecrest boys standout Junior Chibuoguw, Onyie did not start playing hoops until seventh grade. When she did not make her school's volleyball team, a female friend of her brother convinced her to try basketball.
