Ribbon cutting opens new Shoreline playing fields at Meridian Park on March 13

Thursday, March 8, 2012

Please join us for a ribbon-cutting ceremony opening the new Shorewood High School baseball and softball fields at Meridian Park on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 4 pm.

The Shorewood baseball and softball teams will be playing varsity and junior varsity games on the new fields for the first time that afternoon and evening.

The fields are located behind Meridian Park School. The entrance is at North 170th Street and Wallingford Avenue North. Parking is available on site or at Meridian Park School or the Shoreline Children’s Center.

The playing surfaces are FieldTurf and are lighted for evening use. The complex was designed by D.A. Hogan and Associates and the contractor is Terra Dynamics.

Thank you to our community for your support. These fields were paid for from funds from the 2006 bond issue.

It is extremely unfortunate indeed that this project was completed against the strenuous objections of the neighbors and without any real analysis of environmental impacts. The Field lighting will be a huge shock to the community as well as the traffic increases from having HS games played at this site. Impacts to wildlife in two very close by wildlife habitat areas have not been properly assessed. The Night Skies, so appreciated by the neighbors and bird life will now be seriously impacted.

It is just one more example of the Shoreline School District running roughshod over taxpayers and voters of their community. When people voted for this bond in 2006, they had no idea that this would be one of the unfortunate results . The supposed "benefits" of a fancy new sports complex in a residential neighborhood and supposed "educational" assets are dubious at best, compared with the serious impacts to the community. Also, the serious lack of notice and involvement with the immediate community is as glaring as the searingly bright lights to be turned on till 11pm and blasted into the night skies.
