Shorewood boys defeat Shorecrest 65-54 at Shorecrest Wednesday as each team had one final regular-season game before starting tournament play next week

The Shorewood boys’ basketball team defeated Shorecrest 65-54 on the Shorecrest floor Wednesday, Feb. 1, to avenge a Shorecrest victory over Shorewood at Shorewood Jan. 21.

Each team played its last regular-season game Friday or Saturday before starting Northwest District 3A tournament play next week.

Shorecrest finished its regular season Friday with a 49-41 victory at Glacier Peak in a game that was postponed from Jan. 17, for a final 13-3 Western Conference 3A division record (14-6 overall).

Shorewood had a 12-3 Wesco 3A record (15-4 overall) going into a Saturday home game with Mountlake Terrace that also was postponed from Jan. 17.

Shorecrest and Shorewood will go into the District tournament as the No. 2 and No. 3 Wesco 3A teams, with the order not yet set, 

Both teams will open the tournament with home games Wednesday, Nov 8. Whichever team finishes second will play host to Oak Harbor. (7-9 Wesco 3A, 7-13 overall). The No. 3 team with play host to the No. 2 3A team from the Northwest Conference, either Ferndale or Sedro-Woolley.

In Shorewood’s 65-54 victory over Shorecrest Wednesday, Feb. 1, Shorewood led 15-13 after the first quarter and 28-26 at halftime before the Scots took a 49-43 lead after the third quarter, only to see the Thunderbirds outscore Shorecrest 24-5 in the final period for the 11-point win. Ben Andrews led Shorewood with 21 points followed by Taylor Freeman with, 15, Semir Kadiric with 13 and Gage Carroll with 11. Junior Chibuogwu scored 26 for Shorecrest followed by Ryan Canfield with 14.

The Shorecrest junior varsity team defeated the Shorewood JVs. 47-42, and the Shorewood “C” team defeated Shorecrest. 65-54.

In Shorecrest’s 49-41 victory over Glacier Peak, the Scots led 14-9 after the first quarter, 20-16 at halftime and 35-26 after three quarters before coasting to victory in the final period. Chibuogwu led Shorecrest with 23 points followed by Keith Shattuck with 13. The Shorecrest JVs defeated Glacier Peak, 58-54.

Chibuogwu finished the regular season with 355 points in 20 games for an average of 17.8 points per game.
