Dear Shorecrest supporters,

The Shorecrest High School marching band and pipers will be taking their award-winning Scottish pageantry to Ireland this March to perform in one of the biggest parades in the world - the St Patrick's Day parade in Dublin. This is the trip of a lifetime for our young band members and it will no doubt be a fabulous experience.

HOWEVER... The school-owned bagpipes are NOT in good shape and are in need of urgent repair. I was hoping we could get through this trip with the pipes as they are, but it's become very clear that they need to be repaired before we leave. In addition, the pipes that our newest band members are attempting to learn on are in very bad condition.

So I am making this sincere call to our community for support. Unfortunately we don't have much time. The band leaves for Ireland on March 14th and we are quickly running out of time to raise the money needed to refurbish these instruments.

I am asking our friends, families and SC alumni to help us get these pipes ready for Dublin.

Bagpipe parts needed: (estimated retail price)
  • Pipe Bags - $215 x 10 2150
  • Pipe Bag Covers - $70 x 10 700
  • Drone Cords - $24 x 10 240
  • Misc. Maintenance Supplies - $30

Total: $3120

Checks can be made out to Shorecrest High School, with "Pipers" in the memo line. Donations can be mailed or left in-person at the Shorecrest main office, 15343 25th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155, 206-361-4286.

Sincere thanks to everyone who wishes to contribute.

How much is in the district reserves? This sounds like somthing worth funding.

Oh Goodness....how about we let them try to raise the money without bringing in "Why does the district do _____?"

Thinly veiled...

@FirstCommenter...

It's not a matter of whether or not it is worth funding. All arts programs are worth funding, and in Shoreline Schools music is always a high priority. But considering the amount of money needed to get these instruments repaired, and the short time frame in which to do it, I wouldn't expect the school itself to cough up that much money. The school gives great support to the music programs and ASB clubs, but fundraising is always needed. The marching band has a huge fundraising effort underway for this trip to Ireland and it is mostly coordinated by a parent-run boosters group called Dublin Dollars.

The SC Pipe Band and Highland Dancers are performing groups and ASB clubs, and as such can and do raise much of their own money.

I went on this trip as a Shorecrest senior in 1994. It was an amazing experience. I would encourage all who have the means to support this great cause. Many of the students have likely never been fortunate enough to travel abroad. Not to mention that supporting the arts is always a good cause!
