Backyard Birds: Great Blue Heron

A regular visitor to our neighbor's fir tree in Richmond Beach is this Great Blue Heron. This heron has been using this tree to take a rest break about three times a month for the last four years. It will stay in the tree for about an hour before moving down to the nearby Richmond Beach Saltwater Park.

The bird appears to be mature and seems to be well over three feet in height. Blue Herons can be four and a half feet tall, weigh up to seven pounds and live for fifteen years. This picture was taken Tuesday, the 29th of November 2011.
