Letter to the Editor: ‘Tis a Puzzlement

To the Editor:

It is with considerable wonder that I watch the campaign of Lake Forest Park Mayoral Candidate, Dwight Thompson. To date he has blanketed the city with mailings of no less than 5 brochures seeking votes for his election in what is now the most lavishly endowed campaign in the city’s history. (Thompson Campaign expenditures now surpass $16,250.00 according to the Public Disclosure Commission).

This is somewhat disquieting in the face of his frequently expressed disinterest in or contempt for various groups of his fellow citizens, whose votes he is attempting to solicit.

First consider the chilling 78% rejection of his brain-child Prop 1 in the most recent election. Although the ballot measure was officially recommended for a “No” vote by both the local Republicans and Democrats, he now claims that the ballot measure, rushed onto the ballot in an off-election cycle, was simply a sort of public opinion survey on the subject of radically raising property taxes, increasing incrementally over time.

Second, consider his working relationship with the 32nd District Democrats, of whom Mr. Thompson is a member. He summed up his failure to obtain this group’s endorsement with the exit line: “It is their loss, not mine”.

Third and more recently, he mailed an expensively printed brochure condemning Lake Forest Park Gov Watch, whose endorsement he also failed to obtain, despite the fact that all candidates for office in Lake Forest Park were solicited by the group to be interviewed. This group is non-partisan, has Republican, Democratic, and Independent members, and is completely transparent; its membership, meetings, and goals are open to public scrutiny and may be viewed at www.lfpgovwatch.org.

I wonder what Mary Jane Goss' total expenditures would add up to if you included the money spent by Gov Watch and the REALTORS? If you want to talk about spending, it's only fair to consider these in the mix.

The Gov Watch group has been criticizing the City and its leadership for the past year. Now, you act all surprised that none of the incumbents wanted to be part of your endorsement process. It's an absurd statement.
