Tracy Andersen, third grade teacher at Meridian Park School, will be honored as the Dec. 1 Shoreline School District recipient of the Heroes in the Classroom award sponsored by the Seattle Seahawks and Symetra Financial.

Tracy was surprised with the award at a ceremony in the library at Meridian Park.

Symetra Heroes in the Classroom is a community program that recognizes Shoreline, Renton and Seattle teachers for outstanding leadership and instructional skills during the Seattle Seahawks season. Tracy is the seventh Shoreline teacher to be honored this season, joining Jennifer Etter (Shorecrest), Therese Russell (Brookside), Anne Marie Culver (Kellogg), Ali Airhart (Syre), Diana Dillard (Shorewood) and Kay Law (Ridgecrest).

Tracy is in her fourth year at Meridian Park and previously taught in the Renton and Highline School Districts. She will be recognized at the Seahawks home game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night and will receive a team jacket, two tickets to the game and on-field passes, and a $350 Office Max gift card for classroom supplies.

Tracy was nominated by a colleague, who wrote in part: “Students come to Ms. Andersen with all levels of need and somehow, in her magic kingdom, she manages to meet the unique needs of so many. Her lessons have clear purpose and are always focused on an academic standard and core learning need. Her lessons are lively, students are engaged and constantly pushed to participate and voice their ideas. Tracy’s students thrive because she believes in them and keeps the bar high.”

In addition to the awards before each home game, Symetra and the Seahawks will make a $10,000 donation to three participating schools following the 2011 season. Funds will be designated to support a specific student achievement program at each school.

Federal Meal Assistance funds available for qualifying child or adult day cares

Child and Adult Care Food Program funds meals for children and eligible adults

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction’s (OSPI) Child Nutrition Services section encourages eligible non-residential licensed child care centers, family day-care homes, homeless shelters, at-risk centers and some adult day care centers in Washington to participate in the federal Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).

The CACFP reimburses some costs associated with serving meals to children and qualified adults. In Washington state, the CACFP has been administered by OSPI’s Child Nutrition Services since 1989.

The following care centers and institutions may participate in the CACFP:

1. Nonresidential licensed public or private nonprofit child care centers or family day care homes.
2. For-profit child care institutions in which at least 25 percent of children served are low income based on the centers licensed capacity or enrolled capacity, whichever is less.
3. Child care centers that serve at-risk children.
4. Nonprofit homeless shelters that provide temporary residential facilities to children.
5. Qualifying public or nonprofit adult centers, or for-profit adult centers that receive compensation under Title XIX of the Social Security Act for at least 25 percent of their enrolled adults, also are eligible for CACFP reimbursement.

Salomon expanded his lead over opponent Robin McClelland to 119 votes in final certified results Wednesday from 109 votes Monday and 104 votes last week.

Kaleigh Phillips Named SCC Women's Basketball Player of the Week

The 6'1" freshman from Summit High School in Valencia, CA led the Lady Dolphins in scoring for the week, hitting 10 points on Tuesday night at Northwest Indian College and adding 15 points on Saturday against Yakima Valley Community College. 

SCC defeated NWIC 66-48 but was defeated by the defending NWAACC Champions, YVCC 80-44.

SCC plays South Puget Sound CC on Saturday at the SCC Gym at 2:00pm.

Jesse Vaughan Named SCC Men's Basketball Player of the Week

The sophomore forward from Spokane scored 48 points against South Puget Sound on Sunday in the 3rd place game at the Pierce College Thanksgiving Tournament. 

He also added 20 points in 2 point victory against Pierce College in the opening round of the tournament and 18 in a loss Whatcom CC in the semifinals. 

Vaughan is averaging 28 points a game in four games this season for the Dolphins who are off to a 3-1 start.

SCC plays in the Community College of Spokane Tournament this week in Spokane, WA.

SCC students in Olympia Monday for budget rally

The Shoreline Community College Student Body Association organized a rally in the state Capitol in Olympia Monday at the opening of a special session of the state Legislature, November 28, 2011.

The Student Body Association (SBA) organized the rally in opposition to proposed budget cuts for higher education. More than 100 students were expected to attend the rally with bus transportation and other support provided by the SBA. The SBA had previously organized a Teach-In Day on campus for students to learn about the issues surrounding the potential reductions.

They were part of many groups which headed to the state capitol to protest the cuts anticipated in public education, higher education, and social services. Some of the protestors became unruly on Tuesday, November 29, and Sen. Ed Murray, chair of the Budget committee, shut down that day's budget hearing.

The primary part of the state budget that lawmakers have access to for cuts is the General Fund, which is almost all funding for education and social services. Most of the money in the state budgets is in "earmarked" funds such as transportation and salaries and can't be touched by lawmakers.

Lawmakers do have the ability to raise taxes, but recent initiatives have limited that avenue as well, and citizens have indicated their hatred of motor vehicle excise taxes.

The citizen group League of Education Voters has provided a tool for citizens to see how they might handle balancing the state budget, which currently has a projected short fall of $1.4 billion.

"Do you increase school class sizes? Eliminate a support program for 15,000 aged, blind and disabled Washingtonians? Increase the sales tax? Eliminate exemptions to the estate tax? Now you can answer to your own satisfaction. The budget calculator offers a list of possible cuts and new revenue sources, allowing you to mix and match your way to a balanced budget."

The Senate Democrats, which sent out the budget calculator in their newsletter, cautioned that,

"One thing to keep in mind - this tool provides options for increasing state revenues, which includes closing tax looholes. In order to do so, two-thirds - or 66 members - of the 98-members House and two-thirds - or 33 members - of the 49-members Senate would have to come to agreement in order for any of these options to pass."

Comprehensive Plan amendment suggestions due by December 30

Every year the City goes through a Comprehensive Plan amendment process. The annual amendment process is an opportunity for individuals to propose changes to Shoreline’s Comprehensive Plan. Suggested amendments usually address changing conditions or emerging issues.

Individuals are encouraged to propose changes to Shoreline’s Comprehensive Plan and submit them to the Planning and Community Development Department (PandCD). Application materials can be found on the City’s website on the Permits and Development Information page.

To be eligible for consideration, applications must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. December 30, 2011 to Associate Planner Steven Szafran, PandCD, 17500 Midvale Avenue North, Shoreline, WA 98133 or emailed.

Special flu shot opportunity for people who can’t afford to pay

Seattle and King County are partnering to offer flu vaccinations at no charge on Saturday, December 3 from 10am to 6pm at the Walgreens located at 17524 Aurora Ave North in Shoreline.

Vaccines will be offered at no charge for adults and children age seven and older who are uninsured and cannot afford to pay.

Health experts recommend that everyone get the flu vaccine to protect their health and the people around them. The flu can cause significant lost time from work and school, as well as the expense of doctor visits. In some instances, it can also cause hospitalization and even death.

The flu clinic is an excellent opportunity for people who do not have health insurance to get a flu vaccination at no charge.

Shoreline Council candidate Salomon extends lead over McClelland to 109 votes

Shoreline City Council candidate Jesse Salomon expanded his lead over opponent Robin McClelland to 109 votes Monday from his 104-vote lead of last week.

The count came a day before King County elections officials plan to certify results. The countywide voter turnout already had passed the expected final turnout of 52 percent. Officials had 200 uncounted ballots on hand from around the County at the close of business Monday.

Of the 18,116 ballots counted from the city of Shoreline, 7,520 had votes for Salomon, 7,411 had votes for McClelland, 54 had write-in votes and 3,131 left the position blank.

Salomon continued to be outside the range for a mandatory recount. With the two candidates having a total of 14,931 votes, a margin of 74 votes or fewer would put them within the 0.5 percent margin for a mandatory recount.

While Salomon has 50.18 percent of the vote to 49.46 percent for McClelland, incumbent Councilman Chris Eggen had 70.44 percent to 29.20 percent for challenger William Hubbell, and incumbent Councilwoman Doris McConnell had 60.84 percent to 38.74 percent for former Councilwoman Janet Way.

Salomon and McClelland were seeking the position that Councilman Terry Scott now holds.

Voter turnout in the City of Shoreline was 54.19 percent, compared to a countywide turnout of 52.05 percent and a statewide turnout of 52.87 percent.

In the lower right side over the mountains is precipitation, probably in the form of snow falling out of the cloud and onto the ground below.  These clouds are called Cumulus clouds.  They are typically formed around here when there is an unstable air mass over Western Washington.  

Friday evening we had cold and unstable air over the Puget Sound.  Pockets of warmer moist air moving upward are called updrafts.   These updrafts eventually cool enough that the air in the updraft reaches its dew point, causing the water vapor in the air to condense.  As the updraft continues to pump more warmer, moist air into this cloud or cell, it grows bigger and heavier until eventually it starts precipitating, much like the clouds further in the distance in the lower right of this photograph.  

These are the types of clouds that can grow in to thunderstorms if they are not disrupted.  Westerly winds were too strong Friday night to allow these to develop big enough to produce a thunder shower.

SCC Men’s Basketball Beats South Puget Sound CC 111-93

The Dolphin Basketball Team defeated South Puget Sound Community College on Sunday afternoon 111-93 at the Pierce College Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament in Lakewood, WA.

Sophomore Jesse Vaughan scored 48 for the SCC squad along with 11 rebounds and 7 steals. He had significant help from Joe Bodman who had 21 rebounds and 17 points on the night and Will Acromite who scored 19 points. SCC was dominate on the boards, out rebounding SPSCC 62-34. SCC led 51-39 at halftime and never looked back.

SCC captures 3rd Place at the tournament and is 3-1 on the season so far. SCC is averaging 110.5 points per game so far.

Volunteer opportunities at the Senior Center

The Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Senior Center has opportunities available for volunteers in a variety of positions.

The jobs are pretty straightforward but training is provided, as needed.  The Center asks volunteers for a regularly scheduled commitment, but it can be as little as a half day a week.

Here are the current positions available:

• front desk receptionist
• cashier/sales associate in the Thrift Shop
• kitchen helpers for lunch service
• catering help, as needed

Van Drivers are seriously needed. 

Senior Services provides the training necessary. All you need is a regular driver’s license. Time commitment is a half-day or full day, once a week, morning, afternoon, it is pretty much up to you and your schedule.

Jazz is almost 100 years old, and is rich with a variety of musical styles. Dr. Ron Cole guides students through "standard" Jazz repertory that is the basis for all professional pop and Jazz musicians on the scene today.

Navigating the Holidays Mindfully 1 – 3 pm

Learn simple practices with certified mindfulness coach Lorrie Jones, and take home a list of helpful hints to experience the holidays with calm and ease, eating and drinking mindfully and coping successfully with the ups and downs of this time of year.
